About Carole

I was born in London, to Jamaican parents, raised in Southern California, and educated in California and Oregon. My background pushed me to enjoy and explore language, geography, and history. I became fascinated with personal history, as in psychology of the individual. And in studying psychology, I studied how people learn.

I help my students not only with academic content, but with discovering how they learn BEST. I have taughtstudents from 6 months to 24 years old. I currently enjoy teaching 4th and 6th grade at a local charter school.

I have a background in Psychobiology, Psychology, and Education. I love to take the fear from algebra, and math, as well as writing. Most of us just need to find our voice! I can help!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Algebra 1

I have a teaching certificate in elementary and middle schools, with a specialty in mathematics. I also have a background in Clinical Psychology, and can address issues of math phobia, and test anxiety. I have worked in mainstream public schools, and taught in treatment centers, and alternative schools as well. My strength is my flexibility to bring the skills that will help you to the table to understand and learn Intermediate Algebra.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have a current elementary/middle school teaching license in the state of Oregon. I have taught at the elementary level for five years in Portland Public Schools. I have taught high school students elementary content, as well. I currently teach sixth grade at Sand Ridge Charter School in Lebanon, Oregon. I have also passed the tests provided to show my mastery of the content.
In addition, I have a master’s degree in Clinical Psychology, and over 15 years counseling experience. I work well with young children and their families.

ESL/ESOL

I have spent the past six months working with adult learners of English, from Columbia, Mexico, and Argentina, to improve their English language skills. Prior to this I spent five weeks in Mexico building my foundation in Spanish, and studying the history and culture of Mexico. I also took courses in teaching English as a Second Language. I then used my Spanish and ESL skills in the fourth grade classroom to teach my students who arrived at my school without any prior English lessons.

Geometry

I earned a teaching certificate in 2000, with a specialty in middle school math. This included many hands-on ways of demonstrating and committing to memory important geometric ideas. I have then spent the last 15 years helping students get over their blocks toward math, improving their understanding, and then even beginning to love the subject.

Microsoft Excel

I have completed a 40 hour 'Intel Teach to the Future' class for teachers to make good use of Microsoft Office programs teaching academics as well as computer skills to elementary students.

I also completed a graduate level course in computer skills in the classroom for 3 credits.

Finally, I completed a Computing for Middle School Math Teachers course that taught me to use specific programs to teach algebra and geometry, as well as the formulas in Excel to help students see complex algebraic patterns, and geometric patterns.

Study Skills

I learned many different techniques during my own university and graduate school experience, which I have passed on while teaching high school and middle school students. I have worked with many different types of learners, and encourage each student to discover how he or she learns best. Then we can organize a study area and information in a way that it can be digested, remembered, and applied.

My MA in Psychology included understanding how people learn behaviors and information, and my Certificate in Education included many methods of helping students learn as well.

Writing

Besides passing the National Praxis Exam on Writing for Teachers, I have completed the courses: Writing Across the Curriculum, and Scaffolding Writing for ESOL Students. I have spent most of the last 10 years helping young adults learn what they needed to pass the Writing portion of the GED test.

Kind. Helpful. Knowledgeable.

Carole is helping my son with 7th grade math. My son is a TAG math student, however, we changed schools and found that math is taught VERY differently at the new school. This has caused my son much confusion. Carole has been able to help my son relearn how to learn math! I highly recommend her services.
