WHAT SETS ME APART AS A TUTOR?

Content knowledge: I am thoroughly familiar with the entire sequence of American school mathematics, from middle school math through calculus, linear algebra, and discrete math. I also have a strong knowledge base in other areas, including SAT/GRE/GMAT prep, college essay writing, and AP-level history and science.

Experience: I have years of experience teaching and writing curriculum at all levels. I know where students get stuck, and what will help them succeed. I also have extensive experience teaching GMAT and GRE test prep, and workshopping college essays.

Knowledge of pedagogy: My research background in education and the learning sciences means that I have unique insight into how people learn best.

A student-centered approach: If you have "math phobia," you've come to the right place! I know that anyone can succeed in math, given the right learning environment. I also know how frustrating it can feel to sit lost and confused in a math class-- but it doesn't have to be that way! I will work to identify your unique strengths and needs as a learner, and build on those as we work towards your learning goals. I want you to feel listened to and valued.

Passion: I love to learn, and I want you to love to learn, too!

GRE,

GRE

GRE tutoring is one of my particular specialties and one of my favorite types of clients. I have helped many clients prepare to achieve their grad school dreams-- you can be next! When I took the GRE in the process of applying to my PhD program in Berkeley's Graduate Group in Science and Mathematics Education, I received a perfect score in all sections-- 170 Quantitative, 170 Verbal, 6.0 Analytical Writing. I know the content covered on the test inside and out, and I know from experience how to effectively maximize speed and accuracy on each section. My clients appreciate my background in education, and my deep experience working with students at all levels. I am positive, patient, goal-oriented, and focused on your strengths. Frequently, I work with clients who may not have had a math class in quite a while, or who are intimidated by the dense technical texts used in the reading comprehension questions, or who find the style of writing required on the GRE unfamiliar. In all of those cases, I build on clients' existing knowledge and background to help make these items more approachable. Clients ultimately find that their score goal for their dream program is well within their reach, given the right support. I know how stressful prepping for the GRE can be, but my goal is to help you feel confident and comfortable on test day!

Statistics,

Statistics

Statistics is an increasingly crucial core competency for students and professionals in all fields. I have extensive background teaching and tutoring statistics at the high school (7 years' teaching experience) and the college level. Statistics is one of my favorite subjects to tutor, because I can always connect it back to the student's own goals or interests, and tailor the curriculum personally to their strengths as a learner. I also bring in my own experience as a user of statistics-- as a PhD student in education, I understand the importance of statistics in social sciences research.

Common Core,

Common Core

I worked with a team of math teachers to backwards-plan curriculum from the Common Core State Standards for Mathematics Content and Practice, focusing on Geometry and Algebra 2. I have a deep knowledge of the key instructional shifts embodied in the Common Core Mathematics standards, such as the shift to a transformational approach using rigid motions to develop notions of congruence in Geometry. I have experience mentoring both teachers and students who have struggled with the transition to Common Core.

I know how to make a college essay shine! My experience is both personal and professional. As an alum of a top 10 U.S. News National Liberal Arts College, and a current doctoral student in a program with an acceptance rate of less than 2%, I know how to write an essay that stands out in a highly competitive applicant pool. But more importantly, in my former role as a senior advisement teacher, I have deep professional experience supporting my students' college application process-- workshopping dozens' of students essays, helping them to find their unique voice that will make admissions officers sit up and take notice. If you're looking for someone who can really push your college application essay to the next level, I'm here to help! Algebra 2,

Algebra 2

I have written original curriculum for Algebra 2 students, particularly designed for student populations that have traditionally struggled in math. I also have several years' teaching experience with this content. I make Algebra 2 easy for students by connecting it to real-world applications, and allowing the math to "arise naturally" from interesting problems.
Calculus,

Calculus

My teaching background gives me extensive knowledge of the trouble spots and difficulties that many students encounter in Calculus. Calculus requires very different modes of thinking from students' previous math classes, and I love teaching Calculus because I get to see that transition in action. There are many opportunities to work in applications and connections to students' own interests. I also use my expertise as a PhD student in education to make sure that I am using research-based strategies, such as promoting metacognition and student ownership of knowledge, in my tutoring.
Geometry,

Geometry

In my teaching career, I developed particular expertise in Geometry. I wrote Common Core-aligned Geometry curriculum for my school and trained teachers on the instructional shifts embodied in the CCLS (such as transformational shifts). I have mentored new Geometry teachers and enjoy tutoring Geometry.
Precalculus,

Precalculus

My teaching background gives me extensive knowledge of the trouble spots and difficulties that many students encounter in Precalculus. I have extensive experience teaching and tutoring Precalculus students, and I love helping students to cross the bridge from algebra to calculus, where they start to see how powerful math can be as a tool for explaining the world. I also use my expertise as a PhD student in education to make sure that I am using research-based strategies, such as promoting metacognition and student ownership of knowledge, in my tutoring.

Discrete Math,

Discrete Math

Increasingly, Discrete Math courses are being taken by majors in computer science, data science, and engineering, and often represent students' first encounter with proof-based math at a college level. This can be intimidating, but it doesn't have to be! Discrete Math is an incredible subject with applications to many fields-- let me help you feel confident in it! As a math major, I wrote my senior thesis in combinatorics, which is essentially a narrower subfield of Discrete Math. I've tutored many students in Discrete Math, and have an excellent track record of success in support students in their first proof-based mathematics encounters. I've also written curriculum for and taught a Discrete Math elective at the high school level.
Finite Math,

Finite Math

As a math major, I wrote my undergraduate thesis in combinatorics, which shares many topics in common with most Finite Math courses. I have extensive experience with probability, statistics, stochastic modeling, graph and network theory, and mathematical modeling, which also frequently appear on Finite Math syllabi. I have experience teaching this material at both the high school and college level.

Gabe is awesome

This guy knows so much about math, especially calculus. I went from getting c’s and b’s on homework’s and tests to getting a’s. He increased my confidence with the subject tenfold. Would recommend him to anyone.

Knowledgeable and Skilled Tutor

Gabe is incredibly skilled at his job. His techniques to make even the most challenging topics simple really made it easier for me to prepare for my GRE. He is also very accommodating to schedules. I would definitely recommend him as your tutor.

Karan, 8 lessons with Gabe

Excellent Explanations!

Really appreciated Gabe's ability to break down very difficult GRE problems (mainly related to probability, permutations, and combinations) into simple steps and giving me general strategies on how to solve similar problems. Looking forward to having some more sessions with him.

Saba, 2 lessons with Gabe

Through and knowledgeable

I was incredibly lost in my discrete mathematics class. Gabe was able to get me to a point where I was able to understand topics and helped me grasp very abstract topics. I went from completely lost to being able to understand topics.

Nicholas, 4 lessons with Gabe

Great Explanations!

Gabe gave me new ways of visualizing and applying the math topics and good background as to why the math works. And he also taught me new and more straightforward ways of working out the math. Thanks!
