Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ADHD

I have taught students for the past 20 years with this diagnosis. Structure and success and two necessary components to the support that can help these students thrive. In addition, changes to the environment are often necessary. I have a master's degree in special education from Central Connecticut State University in 1982. I have taught in Beaverton School District in Portland, OR for the past 16 years.

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)

I have Oregon certification in special education. I have taught students within the category of autism for the past 16 years. Each child is unique, with strengths and weaknesses. Language processing often impacts classroom success.

Dyslexia

I have Oregon certification in both special education and as a reading specialist. I completed a reading specialist program and completed and passed the state testing as reading specialist. I was trained in Alphaphonics in Texas in 1992. Dyslexia is a reading/language processing difficulty that comes under the criteria of a specific learning disability in reading. Integrating auditory, visual and kinesthetic learning is an important tool.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have a BS in Education and MS in Education from City College of New York and have taught K-6 for the past 27 years. I have elementary certification in both New York and Texas. In addition I have a master's degree in Special Education from Central Connecticut State University in pre-school through grade 12 in Connecticut, Texas, Missouri and Oregon.

Phonics

I completed a specialist certification program from the University of Portland, in 2008. I completed and passed the test for Reading Specialist and have Oregon Certification as a Reading Specialist. I completed an Alphaphonics teaching program in Houston Texas in 1992. I have taught reading, with phonics as a component for the past 27 years.

Special Needs

I have Oregon certification in both special education and as a reading specialist. I have taught for 20 years students of all disabilities: learning, attention, physical, and emotional.

Study Skills

I have Oregon certification in both special education and as a reading specialist. I have taught learning strategies which emphasize organization and study skills, applying a variety of techniques in the process of work completion in all levels of education: elementary, middle and high school. The strengths and skills of each student need to be assessed to best support study skills.
