About John

Let’s face it, human nature drives us to choose the activities that we find enjoyable, worthwhile, and that we possess a certain level of confidence in our ability to succeed with. Lacking these, learning becomes a chore and ineffective at best. I have superior qualifications and skills to help any student tap into these three drivers toward their greater motivation and mastery of mathematics and business skills.

Learning math or business can be enjoyable for practically any student as long as they: (1) experience success with their learning, (2) are recognized for their learning, and (3) are occasionally surprised during the learning process. These three items are a mainstay of my preparation and execution as a tutor, so it is important to me that I first baseline the student’s current abilities and disposition. From there it becomes quite easy to track and recognize success. Finding ways to surprise students is my specialty, whether I incorporate engaging “The Futures Channel” or “Defined STEM” videos, incorporate learning games, or create a customized project (please ask me about the unique Probability Project I designed that leveraged student math computation, analysis, and artistic talents).

For many learners the value of their learning isn’t evident. Perhaps this is because the content was determined by others, such as the Oregon Department of Education. Regardless, the value of a student’s learning is greatly increased when distinct and compelling connections exist between the knowledge to be gained and the student’s personal experiences and/or goals. As a teacher and mentor, I take the time and persist in learning more about my student so together we can identify their goals and make the connections between their learning and goals. This process can be exciting, is always insightful, and produces a valuable source of motivation for the student.

I heartily believe that each individual has fantastic talents and strengths. Yet, I also understand many often need help with recognizing and leveraging these gifts. I begin successful tutor-student relationships by establishing a common ground with my students, and from Day 1 I focus on identifying my student’s unique talents and strengths. This sparks the confidence building. During my instruction I’m especially mindful of opportunities to integrate my student’s prior successes, pursuits, and ambitions into the lesson. This is a key for engaging students with relevant content while helping them visualize how they can succeed with the material.

From there, my tutoring approach is systematic and further customized to the individual or group. This includes determining student weaknesses regarding the subject matter, and then jointly setting achievable, yet challenging goals that further inspire them as they witness improved mastery.

I believe constructivist teaching can be very powerful and I like to use that technique when I believe the student is ready for it. I am also skilled in direct teaching for instances when my students would benefit more from that style.

I believe each individual needs to take personal responsibility for their learning, and this is often the first major hurdle for students. I use my inherent enthusiasm and can-do attitude, and take great patience using the techniques and tools mentioned above to find various ways to motivate my students. I model mutual respect at all times, and make it clear to my students that I’m able to learn from them as well. It is truly amazing to see what happens to an individual when they begin to believe that you admire their abilities. For me, Teaching-Learning is a two-way street, and my students quickly learn that they bring something important to the relationship. This mindset allows me to instill trust as the student recognizes my professionalism and credibility, and they begin to perceive the great possibilities for their learning.

I very much look forward to working with you.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT Math

So you’re trying to prepare for the ACT. Well, you’ve come to the right place. I am extremely talented in excelling with all types of examinations, the ACT included. My test taking ability gave me a huge boost in gaining access to my Aerospace Engineering Bachelors Degree, an Air Force Officer commission, my Masters Degree in Management, and an Oregon Teaching License in Advanced Math. I’m very confident I can help you achieve improved success, and I am eager to get started today!

The key to my success with testing is to approach each test question with an inquisitive and critical thinking mind. Oftentimes a difficult looking problem can become easier if you just know what to look for in the given information. This often means you have an idea about what a sensible answer will look like. Most the time I can eliminate half the answers immediately, leaving only two solutions to work with. Half the test battle can be over when you effectively use this strategy. You also need to know what NOT to look for in a test question…that is, the information that isn’t helpful in solving the problem. As I help you master all these strategies you will notice that your learning accelerates and your skills and success with answering test questions become much greater.

I know that with the proper coaching you too can succeed in this subject. I look forward to helping you achieve your goals.

AFOQT

I am a retired Air Force Officer and have personally taken the AFOQT. In every subject area but one (verbal) I scored in the 90s. I scored above 70 in the verbal section. Also, for three years I served as an AFOQT Test Control Officer at Air Force ROTC Detachment 835. I scheduled and administered the AFOQT for dozens of students.

Algebra 1

I’ve had great success in numerous math and technical courses, as well as with passing all types of examinations. I’ve consistently scored in the 90th percentiles in the mathematical sections of tests like the SAT, ACT, ASVAB, AFOQT, and GRE. The key to my success is to approach each subject or test question with an inquisitive and critical thinking mind. Oftentimes a difficult looking problem becomes quite easy if you just know what to look for in the given information. As I help you master this approach you will notice that you’re learning more and that your skills and success with answering test questions become much greater.

I believe all of us have unique and fantastic abilities, and I also know that with the proper coaching you too can succeed in this subject. I look forward to helping you achieve your goals.

Algebra 2

I recently taught Algebra 2 for two years at a web academy in the Portland Metro area. The key to my success began with using a patient approach to each of my students. Due to being a web academy teacher, I am very astute with 1-on-1 teaching, and I also have great insights with respect to effective and useful online math tools for students.

ASVAB

If you’re preparing to take the ASVAB then you must be thinking about opportunities with Uncle Sam. This can be an excellent avenue toward great professional success, and I am confident I can help you achieve your goals with the ASVAB. This test is very important as it opens doors for career field opportunities, so I'm glad you're serious about getting help. The reason to hire me is that I’ve had great success in excelling on standardized tests, as evidenced by my performance with the ACT, SAT, AFOQT, and GRE. More important, though, I also took the ASVAB and scored in the high 90s. I subsequently honorably served as an enlisted service member, which gave me a leg up in earning income for college and eventually my commission as an officer.

I believe all of us have unique and fantastic abilities, and I also know that with the proper coaching you too can succeed with the ASVAB. I look forward to helping you achieve your goals in this regard.

Business

I’m a retired Air Force officer with primary experience working in Government Acquisition. I hold several Government certifications, including Program Management Level III, Systems Planning, Research, Development & Engineering Level I, Information Technology Level 1, and Test & Evaluation Level 1. I have 20 years experience leading multi-disciplinary, functional, and operational teams to exceed expectations and satisfy customers. I have broad experience with interpreting and analyzing federal policy and contract language to execute complex programs. I’m experienced as a Program Manager and Business Manager, and I’ve held Branch Chief roles in acquisition planning, analysis, and reporting.

Career Development

My individual skills, knowledge, and experiences give me excellent tools for performing superior career advising for you. Yet, it is my profound passion for helping individuals achieve their goals that make me an outstanding advisor. I thrive on listening to individuals, discovering their strengths and weaknesses, finding out what motivates them, and then using my contagious enthusiasm, open-mindedness, and structured strategic approaches to help them set and work toward identifying goals, making plans, and achieving success.

I served for three wonderful years as an Air Force ROTC Instructor and Admissions Officer. As Admissions Officer I was responsible for working with hundreds of student applicants to determine their goals and passions. My first advice to them was to follow their passion, and if the Air Force didn’t fit into that vision they should look elsewhere. This is probably my greatest asset for you: I’m sincere and honest when I support your effort to discover and pursue your dreams and goals.

I'm also very astute with assessing qualifications, discovering career opportunities and resources, then formulating strategies to enhance individual career success. I am a very strong advocate for my customer. I recall one occasion when nine students were being denied ROTC scholarship eligibility due to “deferred adjudications” for speeding tickets. I researched Texas code and Air Force regulations and determined that they should be eligible. I presented my analysis and justification to the Air Force and they agreed, ultimately giving the nine students the thumbs up for meeting the scholarship board. This is just one example of my proficiency and knowledge for obtaining resources and assistance to help you achieve your career goals.

I look forward to supporting you in achieving your career goals.

CBEST

I'm an Oregon certified teacher in Advanced Math. I took and passed the CBEST as one of the prerequisites for getting into George Fox University's Master of Arts in Teaching program.

Elementary Math

I love math, and I have a knack for helping all students learn to build their confidence so they too can have fun with math. The first key step in this process is often simply to convince students that they actually have talents with math. I then also take care to ensure they see the relevance of their learning.

Other ways to overcome barriers is to show how oftentimes a difficult looking problem becomes quite easy if you just know what to look for in the given information. As I help you master this approach you'll begin to notice that you're learning more and your skills and success with answering math questions is becoming much greater.

I believe all of us have unique and fantastic abilities, and I also know that with the proper coaching you too can succeed in this subject. I look forward to helping you achieve your goals.

GED

I recently served as a web academy GED instructor for one year. I have strong test-taking skills, and have done well with many types of examinations, including the SAT, ACT, ASVAB, AFOQT, and GRE.

The key to success is to approach each subject or test question with an inquisitive and critical thinking mind. Oftentimes a difficult looking problem becomes quite easy if you just know what to look for in the given information. You can also learn as you take these type of tests, including the GED. As you go through test questions you often learn that subsequent questions reflect back on others.

I believe all of us have unique and fantastic abilities, and I also know that with the proper coaching you too can succeed with the GED. I look forward to helping you achieve your goals.

General Computer

I am savvy with general computer technology, and have been a "go-to" person in most organizations I've worked in. In my early days in college I took several Fortran classes, so I understand how computers and programming work. What I'm best at is problem solving, which gives me a talent and insights with which to continually build my computer skills. Most recently, I learned the WeScheme online programming language so that I could teach a Video Game Design class.

I also have strong skills with the MS Office suite, Google Apps, and many online applications available through the internet (e.g., Geogebra, Khan Academy, WeScheme, etc.).

Geometry

I've had great success with teaching coordinate Geometry, trigonometric ratios, Geometry proof, and many other traditionally tricky or difficult Geometry topics. I recently taught Geometry for three years at a web academy in the Portland Metro area, which gives me very unique approaches for 1-on-1 teaching. I also have very useful insights with respect to effective and powerful online math tools that are more fun and significantly increase student conceptualization and understanding.

With the proper coaching you too can succeed in this subject. I look forward to helping you achieve your goals.

Microsoft Excel

MS Excel is a fantastic and fun software program. My proficiency with MS Excel is especially noteworthy, as I’ve used the spreadsheet program to build $2 billion budgets, complete Government cost estimates for $million projects, and create, plan, and analyze processes and schedules. I am proficient with many of the advanced features of Excel, such as conditional formatting, formulas, lookup functions, data sorting, etc.

What's especially interesting and powerful regarding MS Excel is the unique capability it offers for project management. In fact, if you're currently job hunting then you need to see how MS Excel can drastically streamline your preparation and management of the entire process.

Whatever your Excel needs, I look forward to helping you master the great capabilities it offers for achieving your goals.

Microsoft Outlook

I have over 10 years of experience with MS Outlook, and have developed proficiencies in many of the more advanced capabilities (e.g., email filtering using rules, distribution lists, reminders and categories, tasks, etc). As a retired Air Force officer with primary experience working in Government Acquisition, I've relied heavily on MS Outlook in my role as Program Manager, Business Manager, and Branch Chief for acquisition planning, analysis, and reporting. I've used MS Outlook to coordinate progress/status meetings and contractor site visits for dozens of team members working on several complex programs and projects.

Microsoft PowerPoint

I have over 15 years experience using MS PowerPoint. I'm proficient with many of the more advanced features, including animation, hyper-linking/linking with Excel, embedded music and video links, manipulating and applying effects to pictures and images, creating and changing charts/graphs/flowcharts, etc. For my Master of Arts in Teaching Action Research project I completed a 48" x 36" poster using PowerPoint. Making the size transition from a typical 8.5" x 11" slide to oversize can be tricky, but with my help I can add that to your skill set too!

As an experienced and certified Government Program Manager I've built high-level PowerPoint presentations for senior executives and Government/Contractor review teams. I've also used this fantastic software package when serving as a Business Manager and Branch Chief roles in acquisition planning, analysis, and reporting.

Microsoft Word

Wow, so you want to learn more about MS Word. What a cool and powerful software package! I have over 15 years experience using MS Word, and I'm proficient with many of the more advanced features, including mail merge, hyper-linking/linking with Excel, embedded charts and presentation slides, indexes (table of contents) and field updating, etc. I can help you master these in very little time.

So, how have I used MS Word? As an experienced and certified Government Program Manager I've used MS Word to create high-level documents for senior executives and Government/Contractor review teams. I've also used this fantastic software package when serving as a Business Manager and Branch Chief roles in acquisition planning, analysis, and reporting. I also used Word to completed my Masters Thesis, two 100-page+ work samples for my Master of Arts in Teaching program, as well as an Action Research project.

I look forward to helping you achieve your goals with MS Word.

Prealgebra

I am eager to help you achieve your success. Using my Pre-Algebra and Teaching experience and skills, I assure you that you will gain an important edge for understanding and mastering Pre-Algebra. Pre-Algebra is a hugely important foundation-setting subject, and as you improve your skills with it you will begin to unlock many doors to success in just about every real world situation, including school. My great success in Pre-Algebra and numerous math and technical courses led me to finish a rigorous Bachelors Degree in Aerospace Engineering, a Masters in Logistics Management, success as a Government Program Manager, and finally my Oregon Teaching License in Advanced Math. I am also talented in excelling with all types of examinations, and I know I can help you achieve improved success.

The key to my success in teaching Pre-Algebra stems from my commitment and confidence in you the student. Here are a few words from my recent University Teaching Supervisor: "he was consistently well prepared in every area. His knowledge and understanding of math drew the students to him as they found out that John had experience in Math beyond the typical classroom...He is thoughtful and caring while at the same time, challenging students to do their best and work hard."

It's true, your best learning will require that you work hard. But, I will be with you 100% helping you achieve your goals. Oftentimes a difficult looking problem becomes quite easy if you just know what to look for in the given information. As I help you master this approach you will notice that you are learning more and your skills and success with answering test questions become much greater.

I know that with the proper coaching you too can succeed in this subject. I look forward to helping you achieve your goals.

Public Speaking

I’m a retired Air Force officer and have 20 years experience leading multi-disciplinary, functional, and operational teams to exceed expectations and satisfy customers. To succeed I had to develop strong public speaking skills and presence. As an Air Force officer, I've given briefings to General Officers, commanders, and company executives. I presented my Masters Thesis findings at the annual Air Force Logistics Symposium in front of dozens of subject matter experts, and I've stood in front of over a 100 imagery experts expounding on the benefits and status of my imagery program.

SAT Math

So you’re trying to prepare for the SAT. Well, you’ve come to the right place. I am extremely talented in excelling with all types of examinations, the SAT included.
