Hello! I have a master's degree in ESOL education from Lewis and Clark College (2002) and have taught Japanese (levels 1-3) and ESOL at the high school level. I have also worked as a substitute teacher in many ESOL classrooms and worked as a Japanese-English translator. Currently I work as an ESOL and Japanese language tutor for adult students. I tutor mostly via Skype , online, or within the Hillsboro area only.

I enjoy working with students from a variety of cultural backgrounds and understand the challenges that come with learning a second language while adapting to a new culture. I lived in Japan, Hawaii and Switzerland for most of my life and had to learn several languages in order to get by. As a tutor I am very patient and enjoy adapting lessons to suit your unique learning style. I like to make learning interesting with lots of useful connections to real life. I feel that learning a language should be fun and interesting in order for it to be sustainable in the long run. The fun part is what will get you through those challenging or even frustrating moments. :)

I like to meet students first before starting lessons. That will give you a chance to get to know me to see if we're a good match. It would also give us a chance to talk about your goals and to design a plan of action before starting. We can also talk about study materials. I have experience teaching with several Japanese and ESOL textbooks. That will depend on what you wish to accomplish.

I can honestly say that I truly enjoy my job! I feel grateful to have met so many dedicated, interesting, and wonderful students along the way.

I look forward to meeting you.

I am a native speaker who grew up speaking Japanese and English at home. I taught high school Japanese (levels 1-3) at a public school and also taught adults. Japanese is notorious for being difficult but that doesn't mean you should suffer through it. I like to include activities that are meaningful to students of different ages and personalities.I often include internet resources, videos, songs to remember difficult concepts, and a good dose of culture.

Excellent ESL teacher!

Hanna was one of the best ESL teachers we've ever known. I asked her to teach 3 teenage kids visiting Portland from Japan academic English skills, mainly reading and writing using the ESL textbook they had never used before. She spontaneously accepted our lesson-request. The lessons were more than we had expected. The kids who had had almost no speaking experiences actively participated in her lessons, tried to interact with her and learned so quickly some academic reading and writing skills. Amazing!

Amazing Japanese/English speaker!

Hanna-San has been my Japanese tutor for 3 years (since October 2013!), and during this time she has been knowledgeable, friendly, hilarious, kind, and forgiving. I would absolutely recommend her to anyone looking to continue their Japanese language skills (me!), start them, or work on already learned grammar. She is a fantastic teacher, an amazing conversation partner, and I'm so glad WyzAnt helped me find her!!

Really good!

I spoke poor English but she taught me to patiently. After meeting her, I decided to do my best to study English.

Knowlegeable and patient tutor

Hanna is a very knowledgeable and patient tutor. She is well prepared for our lessons and has good advice on how to study and practice. Every week before we start the lesson in the Genki series we have an ad lib conversation using the grammar and vocabulary that I had previously learned. Then we continue with the textbook. My Japanese has really improved and I looking forward to learning more from Hanna.

Native speaker of both English and Japanese, patient, and fun!

I'm going to Japan in a few months to study at a language school, and I needed a tutor to help polish my grammar, vocabulary, and speaking skills. I could not have asked for a better tutor than Hanna! She's patient, informative, and likes to keep things fun and interesting.

Excellent Tutor

Hanna's tutoring session was great. She kindly taught English to my wife with Japanese for better understanding. It helped her to be relaxed and be motivated. My wife was happy to have her lessons. And she also recommended an appropriate workbook after 1st lesson.

Very patient.

Hanna is fabulous with my ADD child. She searched until she found the best way to teach her. She is kind and caring with my daughter and never get upset when she becomes distracted. She even suggested that we do a little bit shorter lesson so she could stay on track easier. She is one of the best tutors that I have ever worked with. Always on time and prepared to start. You could not go wrong with hiring Hanna for you tutoring.

Fun, flexible tutor

Hanna has quite a bit to offer as a tutor - my wife and I took Japanese lessons from her for about a month. She always used fun games and activities to keep the lessons engaging, and she was very generous in terms of scheduling. If we needed to change the day we were meeting, see her on strange hours at weekends, etc, she was willing to make it work. As working professionals, we found the flexibility extremely valuable.

Very good session

Hanna's tutoring session was great. We were able to figure out what strategies would be the most efficient in order to become proficient enough to pass Pacific University's Japanese Proficiency Test. Because my Japanese writing skills has faltered since graduating from college, we went over methods that I could try in order to put it into daily use. In my case, Hanna suggested that I carry around a "kanji dictionary"; a notebook I could use to write down kanji that I am not familiar with, and use it in a sentence that is meaningful to me. Hanna's methods will become very helpful as I prepare for my proficiency test in the coming month.
