Bio

I have over a decade worth of teaching and tutoring experience at UC Berkeley. My favorite classes to teach are those that integrate a wide variety of disciplines, like anatomy, molecular and cell biology labs, and that is partly why I love biology—specifically neuroscience—so much. It’s beautiful since it integrates so many disciplines, and requires building a good narrative, a model, to understand. Thus, while at Berkley, I earned a bachelor’s degree and a master’s degree. I have finished Ph.D. coursework and and qualifying exams, but am finishing my dissertation on neurotrauma.

I was able to succeed by doing problem sets, particularly focusing on meaningful problems (and not necessarily quantity). Having a clear mental model of the system helps me understand the question, to break it down and systematically solve it. Having a clear mental model reduces anxiety and builds the confidence needed to tackle problems with a clear mind, so practice becomes much easier and often times fun.

I have developed, practiced, and tested many strategies that, when used, will help you be a successful student, even for things that do unfortunately require brute force memorization. I have worked with hundreds of students, and hope to bring my experience and perspective to make whatever you're struggling with engaging, manageable, and possibly even fun. Today, I find myself studying math just for the pleasure of it and applying those principle to my experiments.

I look forward to helping you eliminate fear and frustration and make your learning a hero’s journey of discovery and wonder.

Biostatistics,

Biostatistics

Everything from gene expression to quantifying behavior requires underlying statistical methods in order to make meaningful conclusions and to validate hypothesis. Having a deep understanding of biostatistics is essential to research, and these methods plays a very important role in every biologist's toolkit. I use statistical methods every day to make meaningful interpretations of my data. Presently, I use mostly R or Python to perform analysis, but have experience with other biostatistical packages such as Graphpad Prism etc.

Genetics,

Genetics

I am a cell biologist; genetics is at the heart of everything I do. I am an expert in viral vectors and all aspects of transduction and transformation of mammalian cells. I have mentored dozens of students on the techniques of genetic engineering and manipulation, cloning, DNA/RNA extraction and purification, qPCR. I have experience in next generation sequencing techniques, genome assembly, and RNA-seq. I am presently learning techniques to analyze single-cell whole transcriptome sequencing, and am ecstatically excited about the emerging spatially resolved transcriptomics technologies.

Amazing tutor - one of the best on Wyzant

I'm a high schooler and recently got an opportunity to intern at a bioinformatics lab. I was suddenly hit with so many difficult biology/computer science concepts and didn't know what I was doing. My first prompt was setting up a DNA sequencing pipeline, so I matched with Shawn and we tried to figure it out together. The software was hard to work with and both of us were confused. I gave up for the night, but what I was not expecting was to see Shawn's message a few days later saying he had figured it out, found a way to make the software work, and was attaching the sequencing files. He worked well outside class hours to help me achieve my goal, and this was the first time I had ever worked with such a passionate instructor. I am so happy to have the opportunity to learn from Shawn, someone extremely dedicated and willing to teach you in many different ways until you find the style that works for you. Thanks, Shawn!

Highly Insightful & Engaging Tutor

Shawn is articulate and to the point, capable of bringing down high-level biology theories and concepts to my high schooler’s level of understanding. My 15-year-old was initially unsettled that Shawn did not have a pile of test prep questions to walk her through as requested. However, she was then completely blown away by his alternative style of teaching, depth of knowledge, and extreme passion for all the topics covered. This set a different tone, motivated her in an unusual way, and improved her grades from Bs to As. Thank you Shawn for being so patient in answering her endless questions, giving her that extra boost of confidence, and teaching at the perfect speed!
