Although I always got good grades in math at school it wasn't until I encountered Algebra that I realized I actually liked it. Before then it seemed like the subject was just about being able to follow a bunch of strict procedures, but my Algebra class opened my eyes to the fact that most of math is more about solving problems and having the tools in your mental toolbox to be able to do it. I love solving problems, and I went on to study engineering at Rutgers University, where I had to take all of the math and science classes needed for an engineering degree. I got my Bachelor of Science degree in Computer Engineering from Rutgers University where I graduated with highest honors in 1997. I went on to work in the field of microprocessor design, and then in software development, but ultimately decided that those careers weren't for me.

However, what I always enjoyed during my education was helping other people, either informally helping my friends with their homework or projects, or during the term where I had a position providing in-class help and support to the students in a Calculus recitation. Helping people move toward their goals is something that is meaningful and important to me, and tutoring is a way that the student and I can be on the same page, pushing in the same direction. When working with a student my goal is to figure out what is giving them difficulty and help them figure out ways past the obstacles so they can achieve the results they want.

My recent tutoring has been done in the Math Resource Center at Lane Community College. There I worked with a broad spectrum of people, including traditionally college-age students as well as older adults taking classes later in life, in subjects ranging from Algebra to Calculus.
