University of Minnesota (B.S. Earth Sciences)
University of California, Santa Barbara (Master's)
I recently graduated from the University of California, Santa Barbara, where I acquired my M.S. in Earth Sciences. The focus of my thesis was using computed tomography, 30 million year old mammal fossils, and statistical shape analysis models to create a new method of taxonomic identification. Along side my research, for the entirety of my two years at UCSB I was also a lab/discussion instructor for undergraduate Earth Science courses.
I taught courses ranging from Dinosaurs to Intro Geology. Throughout my time teaching lab sections, the most rewarding moments were when I began to notice get happy and excited when they came to class. In the previous sections they had made substantial progress and filled gaps that they previously had in their learning, and getting to see them positively change their outlook towards the course during the semester was powerful.
I received a 33 (99th percentile) on the ACT Math section, and a 162 (85th percentile) on the GRE Math section.
Throughout my grade school (k-12) math education, I would spend most of the class time helping other students with basic math concepts and problem sets. My university education further taught me math applications in each scientific field.
I received a 34 (99th percentile) on the ACT Science section and have two higher degrees in the physical sciences. For both years of my graduate degree I was actively teaching undergraduate students the fundamentals of science, biology, and geology.
Having written extensively in both high school and undergraduate school, I further refined my writing skills by writing a thesis during graduate school. I received weekly criticisms of my writing from numerous professors in the department and would go on to write a 80 page thesis to receive my Master's Degree. My thesis will be submitted to a scientific journal in the coming months to be reviewed for publication.
If you have any questions about my knowledge and expertise, please let me know! If you are struggling with a topic (Math/Science/Writing or other) that I have not explicitly mentioned, send me a message. I am certain that I will be able to review that topic and master it such that I can share the knowledge with others; I'm always looking to refresh my own education! In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
