About Amanda

Teaching, Editing, Reading, and Writing are my four greatest passions. I discovered these passions after having ironically been a chemistry major for the first two years of my life as an undergraduate. So, with my Associate's Degree, I decided to move to Eugene and study English at the University of Oregon. I now carry a Bachelor's of Arts in English with a minor in Writing, Public Speaking, and Critical Reasoning, and graduated with a 3.8 overall GPA. Having no intention of moving out of Eugene quite yet, I have applied to the graduate program at the UO and have been accepted into (the very competitive) Master's of English Modernism program, to start Fall 2016.

With the goal to become a college professor, I hope to gain further experience with students, tutoring them specifically in the subjects of English, Writing, Public Speaking and Basic Literary Critique. That being said, I am bilingual and can speak, read, and write in Spanish, and thus am able to tutor most levels of Spanish. Moreover, I have skills in, and am able to teach writing in other subjects like history, philosophy, psychology, and basic science. As a junior in college, I was a private freshman English and Spanish tutor and was able to change C ranking papers into an A's in both subjects. I do this by challenging students to push themselves to listen to their writing voices and stretch their minds to clearly and successfully prove whatever thesis that they claim.

I am proficient in grammar, speech organization, essay writing and editing, and literary critique (especially modernist literature and also Shakespeare). I have skills in helping students discover the best and most persuasive ways to prove their claims. I can also help students see themes in literature that they may have not picked up on before, and also help them develop ideas that they themselves discover in literature, but cannot seem to prove wholly in essay or speech format.

Being bilingual, I am able to teach grammar, speech, reading and writing, and literary/artistic critique in both English and Spanish.

I am able to travel to students by appointment only, and am generally available Tuesdays and Sundays 1pm-7pm. Should a student need to cancel or postpone for whatever reason, I do ask to be notified at least 24 hours in advance.

I look forward to helping students realize their excellent writing skills as well as the joy in writing persuasive, eloquent essays, critiques, reports or speeches!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Public Speaking

I hold a Bachelor's Degree in English with a minor in Writing, Public Speaking, and Critical Reasoning. I have taken and received and A in several speech and rhetoric classes in order to obtain this achievement. Having experience tutoring for introductory speech classes, I am well versed in the arts of persuasion, organization, and critique.

Reading

I've achieved an Associate's Degree in Liberal Arts with an Emphasis in Natural Science, as well as a Bachelor's Degree in English with a minor in Writing, Public Speaking and Critical Reasoning. I am a lifetime member of both the National Society of Collegiate Scholars and the Golden Key International Honors Society.
