My passion is helping students to become comfortable with their own learning styles, and above all to love learning. I am certified in Maryland and Oregon. I have experience in a range of tutoring environments including one on one, small classes, and the public school system. My particular strength is reading, writing, literature, and social studies.
I like to work in a relaxed environment, free from tension. I tailor my lessons to match the interests and learning styles of my students. I believe it is important to have a healthy balance between ease and challenge. Each accomplishment leads to greater confidence. I begin by gaining an understanding of the student's confidence with learning and seek to establish those techniques and habits that lead to success. I believe learning is fun and desire to impart that enthusiasm with all my students.
I have a lifelong love of books and learning. This has led me to be very accomplished in the areas of reading, literature, grammar, and writing. I particularly enjoy the classics and children's literature. I enjoy helping students to express themselves through writing, which can be a daunting task for some. My practice is to break those looming tasks into manageable bites until the whole process is mastered. I also like to incorporate games into my lessons, which allows a short break from the effort of learning new material while reinforcing learned concepts in a fun way. Finally, I like to suggest ways for families to support their children by reinforcing the new material learned as well as good study habits. My ultimate goal is to see my students independent and no longer in need of my services.

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
In my experience as a home-school teacher and co-op tutor as well as my conventional training and teaching in the public schools, I specialized in tailoring education to individual students including helping each student to find their personal learning style which defines such elements as motivation, distractions, and energy levels, as well as identifying priorities and recognizing strengths and weaknesses. We addressed working within time limits to pace out long assignments and test preparation. In addition, we learned tips and techniques for note taking and memorizing. I am certified for grades 4 through 9.
