About Alex

I have been tutoring for over 10 years. Beginning in high school, I volunteered as a tutor for local at-risk elementary and high school students in my hometown of Morristown, NJ. I continued tutoring on a volunteer basis through college and started using my talents to earn a little extra money, while earning my engineering degree at Lehigh University. After college, I practiced engineering for a while before becoming bored with my career options, so I began my own tutoring business in the Annapolis, MD area. I primarily taught math to high school students, but I also received a few elementary, college, and adult students seeking help in all levels of math, chemistry, physics, statistics, and biology during my two years in Maryland. Recently, I enrolled at the University of Oregon as an M.Arch student beginning in the Summer Quarter of 2017. I have written a bit about my experiences both in math and science bellow.

Academically, math has always been my strongest subject. In high school, I tried to take the most demanding math classes I could take. I completed AP Calculus AB with a 5 on the AP test, AP Calculus BC with a 5 on the AP test, and AP Statistics with a 4 on the AP test. I scored a 780 on my SAT math section, a 760 on my Math I subject test, and a 790 on my Math II subject test. Due to my high scores on the AP Calculus AB and BC tests, I placed out of Calculus I and II at Lehigh University. After these courses, I was required to take Calculus III (3 Dimensional Calculus) and Linear Algebra. Math has also been my most commonly taught area in the past two years, primarily focusing on algebra, statistics, and beginners calculus.

While math is my strongest subject, the sciences have been my passion. I took AP Chemistry in high school and scored a 4 on the test. I also took physics in high school, but did not take the AP test. As an engineer in college I was required to take both Chemistry and Physics classes. I began college as a mechanical engineer, so I spent most of my first two years learning physics (physical, electrical, and magnetic) and dynamics. I switched to environmental engineering after my first two years, so I began to take many more chemistry classes (Chemistry, Organic Chemistry, and Chemical Engineering). As an environmental engineer I was also required to take Civil Engineering courses, so I am familiar with static physics and structures as well. My tutoring experience focuses primarily on physics, followed by chemistry and biology.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT Math

I am very familiar with the ACT test, as I prepared to take it in high school, however, I scored well enough on my SATs that I never officially took the test. I have been tutoring standardized math tests recently, so am very comfortable instructing for these types of exams.

Algebra 1

Algebra is my bread and butter when it comes to math. This subject always came most easily to me in school and I was consistently at the top of my class in this subject. Furthermore, my prowess in this area can be seen in my high SAT math section and subject test scores of 780 and 760, respectively.

Algebra 2

As a math tutor since graduating college, I have frequently run into students needing help in Algebra.

Ecology

I took Ecology at the 100 level as a part of my studies in Environmental Engineering.

Geology

I took Geology in college at the 100 level as part of my studies in Environmental Engineering.

Geometry

I excelled at geometry in high school where I received top marks. Additionally, my geometry knowledge can be shown through my high score on the SAT math section (780).

GRE

I took the GRE in Dec 2016. I scored a 170 on math, a 160 on reading, and a 5 on writing.

Physical Science

As an environmental engineer I studied many of the physical sciences including, geology, oceanography, meteorology, and more. Additionally, I have tutored physical sciences fairly regularly over the past year.

Prealgebra

Prealgebra is one of my strongest subjects. I scored well on my SATs in this area and as a school subject. I feel most comfortable working with students in this age range as well.

Precalculus

I frequently tutor precalculus. Additionally, I excelled in precalculus during high school and throughout college while studying for my Engineering degree from Lehigh University.

SAT Math

I have been tutoring SAT math most predominantly over the past couple of months. When I took the test as a high schooler, I scored a 780. I am very comfortable teaching this subject.

Statistics

I took AP statistics in high school then continued in college by taking a statistics course in the math department (not business or engineering) where we weren't allowed to use any computer aid. Now I help tutor a few students in high school statistics.

My son is very standoffish regarding new people. However, he left his first session with Alex yesterday and sang his praises. He said he was cool and went with the flow. I couldn't stop laughing. He said Alex broke it down in a way he could understand and he wants to continue working with him. This is the first time I've used a one-on-one tutor and I am very pleased.
