About Jessica

As a returnee from an early study abroad experience in high school and a variety of experience working with international students, I know how difficult it can be learning a language, especially one as complicated as English. I am able to help students learn grammatical concepts, study new vocabulary, provide various mnemonic methods (memory tricks to remember new words and concepts), provide cultural information about the languages I tutor, and be a conversation partner in the target language(s). I can sympathize with the language-learning experience, having studied Spanish and currently being an Arabic learner. I can also relate to the bilingual/biracial experience, being half Japanese and half American and raised in both cultures and languages.

I love to learn about new languages and cultures, and am a current major in International Studies at the University of Oregon with a regional focus in the Middle East, and minors in Arabic Studies and Women's and Gender Studies. I truly believe that the power of communication is one of the greatest that one can have in today's world, and am committed to assisting anyone in obtaining confidence and expertise in reading, writing, listening, and speaking the target language.

I am also an expert in standardized test-taking methods, particularly SAT tests and language tests. More specifically, I am an experienced writer and am familiar with correct English grammar in academic works. I am able to provide feedback on any form of writing that a student gives me in a constructive manner. I have a passion for the art of writing in all of its many forms, and thus understand its many difficulties and technicalities.

At the University of Oregon, I am employed as a tutor for international students to assist them in obtaining the sufficient level of English skill to pass both the TOEFL and IELTS and enter as full-time University students, understanding academic language and complex topics in English. I am a conversation partner and homework tutor to the students and also correct essays and other written assignments. I am experienced in providing casual yet constructive and effective criticism and corrections to improve students' language ability.

I am familiar with the structure of the Reading and Writing portions of the SAT and how to achieve high scores in these sections. I received perfect marks in these sections each time I took the test. I am able to provide effective and constructive criticism to students in their work to successfully take the SAT.

As mentioned above, I have a wide variety of experience working with international students and people. I studied abroad in Japan for one year in high school, and return there each year to visit family. I am currently a major in International Studies, which has allowed me to interact with people from around the world who share a passion for international cooperation and understanding.

I speak three languages (English, Japanese, Spanish) and am currently studying Arabic as my fourth. Having studied both Spanish and Arabic in the classroom for a combined total of six years, I am familiar with the ways in which language is taught in the classroom and how to supplement this with out-of-classroom experiences. I believe that the classroom is not the best learning environment for everyone, especially in language-learning, and hope to provide different learning styles for students who are struggling with curriculum, are dissatisfied with classroom teaching methods, or are simply looking for a supplement to their current method of learning.

I am also familiar with the unique way in which one acquires language skills when one has been raised bilingually. Language classes are often a combination of too easy and too hard when one has been raised in one country speaking a foreign language as well as the native language. I understand that communication skills and the ways in which one learns more about one's native languages are different for bilingual people.

If you want to learn more about my particular skill set or just more about me as a person, please do not hesitate to contact me! I thoroughly enjoy helping others improve in the things I love, as well as learning from those I teach in the process.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Writing

I have edited and finalized a variety of pieces including newspaper articles, academic papers, and personal writings since high school. At university I have written many, many research papers and op-eds and receive outstanding marks on all of them thanks to my grammar skills.
