About Cavan

Hi, my name is Cavan and I have a MA in Linguistics (University of Montana) and a BA (WWU)in Anthropology (cultural concentration and minor in linguistics). I've been tutoring for the past 3 years and regularly subbed for undergraduate Linguistics courses while in grad school. As a Research Assistant, I worked with speakers of the Blackfeet community in Montana. However, My fieldwork experience also includes other endangered/minority languages like Ga and Estonian.

I tutor Cultural Anthropology, Linguistics Anthropology, Intro to Linguistics, Phonetics, Phonology, Syntax, Semantics, Native American Linguistics (especially pertaining to Salish languages and Blackfeet), Historical Linguistics, Typology, and probably more (feel free to inquire if you have a specialized course). I'm always more than willing and excited to help students learn the awesome field of linguistics (and anthropology too, of course).

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Anthropology

I have a Bachelor of Arts degree in anthropology from Western Washington University. My degree covered the four primary sub-fields of anthropology, which include archaeology, cultural, biological, and linguistic anthropology. Although my tutoring experience is more geared towards linguistics, I still have the ability to apply that experience to anthropology as well.

Phonics

I have a MA in Linguistics and a BA in Anthropology (cultural concentration and minor in linguistics). I've taken phonetics courses as both an undergraduate and graduate student. I have been tutoring phonetics to undergraduate students for the past 3 years and have substituted phonetics/phonology courses for professors. While tutoring and lecturing, I regularly assisted native and non-native English speakers with reading, especially with IPA.
