About Martin

Hello, I look forward to helping you learn new material!

I have my PhD in Mechanical Engineering from the Johns Hopkins University and have taught at Johns Hopkins, Maryland Institutes: College of Art and Brown Mackie College. In addition to teaching at the College level I have tutored many High School students through Varsity Tutors in Saint Louis and I have freelanced with students of all ages.

At Johns Hopkins, I mentored many undergraduate and high school students through my research lab, helping them to learn new material, set up experiments, and write reports. I also served as a teaching assistant for multiple mathematics, physics and dynamics related classes and I developed a project centered robotics curriculum that included hands-on laboratory procedures, homework assignments, projects and lectures. I have also served as part-time faculty at the Maryland Institutes: College of Art - teaching topics related to art, philosophy, design, electrical and mechanical engineering, and physics. I built the physics course from the ground, up, creating the curriculum, choosing materials and designing experiments and assignments. At Brown Mackie College in Saint Louis, I was hired as faculty to teach classes in, and manage the curriculum development of, the Biomedical Technology department.

I have had much experience helping students learn, both in one-on-one settings and classroom environments. I am a patient educator who keeps the big picture in mind while guiding the student one step at a time - filling in the pieces of the story like a puzzle. I love to see people learn new things and experience the "lightbulb" when they grasp a new topic.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Calculus

I am an Engineer whose passion is math and science. I have my PhD in Mechanical Engineering from the Johns Hopkins University at have taught at Johns Hopkins, Maryland Institutes: College of Art and Brown Mackie College. In addition to teaching at the College level I have tutored many High School students through Varsity Tutors in Saint Louis and I have freelanced with students of all ages.

Electrical Engineering

I have been the professor of the Biomedical Equipment and Instrumentation, Solid State Electronics, Fundamentals of Electronics, Computer Hardware and Software courses at Brown Mackie College. I have also taught and designed curriculum for the Mechatronics lab course at Johns Hopkins.

My PhD from Johns Hopkins was concentrated in Robotics. I designed and constructed various circuits for my robotic systems and programmed a variety of microcontrollers.

MATLAB

I received my PhD in Mechanical Engineering from Johns Hopkins and used MATLAB extensively in my research. I have modeled robotic kinematics and developed GUI interfaces for robotics projects. I also developed extensive computational scripts for the AX=XB Ultrasound calibration problem.

Mechanical Engineering

I received my Master's and PhD in Mechanical Engineering from Johns Hopkins University.

Physics

I have taken multiple Physics classes as an engineer. I have taught Physics classes at the College level and I have tutored high-school students in physics. I help students to not only learn the formulas, but to understand when and why to apply them. Physics can be fun and exciting and I love to share my joy of learning with students.

Prealgebra

Currently finishing my PhD in Mechanical Engineering with concentrations in Mathematics and Robotics.

I have many teaching experiences across a wide range of ages and interests, from teaching college physics to art students to mentoring High Schoolers in my Robotics lab to working with grade school children at summer camps. See my profile for a list.

Solidworks

I have used Solidworks extensively in my B.S., Masters and PhD. Degrees in Mechanical Engineering as well as during R&D work at Siemens Healthcare. I have used Solidworks to design robotic systems, model mechanical interactions, and interface with manufacturing tools (e.g. 3D printers and laser cutters).
