About Patrice

Dear Student:

I have taught English as a Second Language for nearly fifteen years. What my professional profile does not include is an additional bachelor's degree in Creative Writing from the University of Arizona.

I have taught conversational, business, medical, and academic (tertiary level) in the United States (California) and Japan, Korea, Kuwait, and Finland.

I also thoroughly enjoy proofreading and editing academic papers, articles, proposals, theses, dissertations and other assignments or other texts for publication.

During my college teaching the San Joachin Valley, I also taught Academic Development classes for reading, writing, speaking, and grammar.

I take great pleasure in constantly improving my instructional styles to meet the needs of my current students.

I have a strong background in learning theory that has led me to believe that learning is a two-way street, where the teacher and student learn from and respect one another.

It is essential to listen to what my student feels is her or his needs. While listening, I may ask questions to pinpoint more efficiently what the focus of the lessons should be. Then I discuss this with the student to see if she or he understands and agrees with my proposal. If not, then we will continue to fine tune the plan until we agree with the plan of action.

I was not a particularly good student, but this made me work harder and find ways to accomplish my academic goals. For example, as an undergraduate, I took speed reading courses and hired a proofreader, and I have never regretted those choices.

It is important to continually monitor the success and value of a learning technique. I do believe in learning preferences, but I also believe that it is important for students to develop strengths in their less used learning practices so that no matter what instructional environment they are in, they will be able to adapt and succeed.

Best regards to you in your academic pursuits!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ESL/ESOL

I have my Master's degree in TESOL (ESOL) and have taught it in Japan, Korea, Kuwait, Finland, and the US. I have also taught Business, Academic, and Medical ESL skills. I have taught ESL to students of all ages, but mostly adults.

Grammar

In order to teach English as a Second Language, for Specific Purposes, for Academic Purposes, and the like, I have often needed to explain (American) English grammar in detail to my students. This was and remains especially true when grammatical components in their first language differ from those in English.

Study Skills

Study skills should be tailor fit to the student's learning preferences, competing priorities (job, family), assessment of current study behavior, time management, and intrinsic and extrinsic motivations.

Once a profile of the student's daily schedule are addressed, a ratio of class time to study/homework time can be established.

After that, pinpointing the appropriate and available environment for student study is determined, based on a discussion with the student about the difference between "learning" and "acquisition".

The degree of difficulty for the student and the subjects will also determine the time spent for each subject.

Following that, an assessment of how the student presently manages homework/study, and what other practical skills, technologies, or habits may suit his or her learning can be practiced, tested, and tweaked, to get the best outcome for the requirements of each course.

Writing

I have taught Academic Writing skills for 10 years in American colleges and universities. I also taught Medical and Engineering students writing for two years at Kuwait University. I also taught Business writing skills in Finland at businesses owned by American firms.

Kind and patient teacher!

Patrice helped so much in such a short period of time! She was able to help with vocabulary, pronunciation and more in a way we could only dream of!! She was very attentive and didactic and was able to come up with amazing creative ways to make herself be understood and to make sure what she was teaching was being comprehended! I am definitely going to reach out to her again when needed! Thank yo
