About Susan

I have over 20 years of experience as a professional editor and writer. I've tutored students at the elementary, middle school, and high school levels in English, writing, reading, editing, and basic mathematics (through Algebra 1).

I also have extensive experience with Microsoft Office, WordPerfect, and Quicken. Public speaking and presentation development are also a part of my professional and educational experiences. I'm an accomplished researcher and can teach research skills and techniques.

My goal as a tutor is to learn where a student currently is with the subject matter, what the student's most preferred learning style is, and then develop a process for sharing information and assisting the student to gain competence in the subject matter. In addition to competence with subject matter, I work to have students become self-motivated learners with the skills to learn more in the tutored subject as well as other subjects, including the use of time management, organizational skills, and learning how to seek out any needed assistance.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Algebra 1

While not a mathematician, I've very successfully completed math through Calculus I at the college level and use math and math concepts daily. I've also tutored students from middle school through sophomore college level in basic math and algebra. I have a thorough understanding of algebra concepts and work with students using practice, games, hands-on activities, and other approaches so that they fully grasp concepts and the mechanics of algebra.

Elementary (K-6th)

I've tutored 1st through 6th graders in reading, math, language arts, and spelling for more than 10 years, including several years working with American Indian students. I've worked with students who were below grade level and struggle with mastering concepts. I've also tutored gifted students. I have a Master's Degree in English and work as a professional editor and consultant, as well as a tutor. I'm currently tutoring a 1st and a 2nd grader who are behind grade-level but are catching up rapidly. I work individually with students to assess their strengths and weaknesses and then using a supportive and positive approach encourage them as they learn and progress. Games, working on home work, verbal and written work, and a variety of hands-on and mental activities are used to engage and help students understand concepts and retain information.

Elementary Math

I have tutored students grades 1 - 6 in all basic math functions: counting, adding, subtracting, multiplying, division, fractions, basic geometry, and solving word problems. I use multiple approaches and include hands-on ways of learning math concepts.

English

I have a M.A. in English; 20+ years of editing academic and business writing; 20+ years assisting others with written and spoken English in non-classroom settings.

ESL/ESOL

I have worked with bi-lingual people whose first languages are French, Kickapoo (American Indian), Vietnamese, Arabic, and Spanish to assist them with written and spoken English. This work has been done over at least a 20-year period. I specialize in editing work for people whose first language is not English.

Prealgebra

While not a mathematician, I've very successfully completed math through Calculus I at the college level and use math and math concepts daily. I've also tutored students from middle school through sophomore college level in basic math and algebra. I have a thorough understanding of algebra concepts and work with students using practice, games, hands-on activities, and other approaches so that they fully grasp concepts and the mechanics of algebra.

Public Speaking

Have been a public speaker for over 10 years. Have developed and delivered workshops and presentations at local, regional, and national meetings and conferences, including the development of handouts and PowerPoint presentations.

Study Skills

Organization, prioritizing, and structuring study to learn and to finish assignments on time. These are the basics of developing good study skills. I recently completed an at-distance-learning PhD that required these skills over an extended period of time. I've also taught these skills to students from middle school through college.

Writing

I have a Master's Degree in English and have been providing writing support and guidance to students from middle school through graduate school for many years. I work with students to help them understand their subject and then clearly define or outline the purpose of their writing. I also assist students with the mechanics of writing: grammar, spelling, punctuation, as well as formatting for specific presentation styles (APA, Chicago, etc.). Through a process of writing, review, and then re-writing, students gain skills in all the aspects of developing a paper or report.
