Hello, I'm Robert! I earned a Bachelor of Arts degree with honors in Political Science and a Master of Fine Arts in Writing. I also hold a California Community College Instructor Credential. I'm passionate about teaching; I genuinely enjoy sharing my love of learning with my students and supporting their academic success. Many of my students have said they experience a dynamic and positive attitude in my classroom that they find infectious and elevating. I think this effect has to do with the influence of my background in creative arts. Along with being an educator, I have also been an actor, a writer, a musician, a songwriter, and composer, and I have studied ballet, movement, and improvisation.

I've successfully taught and tutored reading, writing, and public speaking in elementary schools, community colleges, universities, senior centers, youth homes, small businesses, corporations, and government agencies. For example, I've tutored sixth graders with their reading comprehension. I've instructed college sophomores who needed assistance writing their letters of intent, explaining why they wanted to enter a particular academic program. I've conducted three-day writing workshops with Homeland Security immigration officers who said they learned more in my class than three years in high school. I've taught inmates in San Francisco County jail how to read. Some of the students were from Mexico — illiterate in English and Spanish. Despite this initial stumbling block, within three months, they achieved a second grade English reading level.

I attribute the secret of my success to my tutoring methods. As I possess an extraordinary sensitivity to the needs of others, I'm able to guide student progress with a high degree of proficiency. I have a rare gift for "reading" my students: accurately identifying their strengths and weaknesses, and designing engaging lessons tailored to their individual needs. Students of all ages and backgrounds respond positively to this level of care. They relax; they feel safe and welcome; and best of all, they experience the learning process as a collaborative endeavor between student and teacher.

Please feel free to contact me with any questions you might have or to schedule a session. I look forward to hearing from you.

Writing,

Writing

As a published writer and a teacher of writing for 28+ years, I understand that learning how to write is an ongoing practice. I've noticed this approach takes a big load off of my students' shoulders. They focus more on what their purpose is and what they want to communicate, rather than on not making mistakes. To support their writing process, I teach my students how to use a unique writing model I developed that not only streamlines their process but also helps them relax, concentrate on one task at a time, and reduces stress.
