I have enjoyed teaching French, Spanish and English to children, teenagers and adults in public and private settings for over twenty years. I work with students from all over the world in elementary and secondary schools; through adult education and community literacy programs; and by private tutoring. I hold a teaching credential in French, Spanish, Psychology and Literature. I have studied and lived in Switzerland, France, Mexico, Spain and Costa Rica. I love learning new things and personal enrichment classes keep me in touch with being “the student” too.
When I meet with you, we will go over your goals and determine priorities. Taking into account your strengths and weaknesses, our approach will consist of targeted activities to help you accomplish those goals. Our sessions can include homework help, study techniques, specific skill development, practice and application, and useful resources. Over the years, I have developed helpful strategies for students to use academically and personally. I also recently completed a 3-month course on ADHD.

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
In addition to having experience in the classroom helping students, I recently completed a 12-week course on ADHD taught by a pediatrician and psychiatrist.
I have read several books on the subject and I regularly attend meetings on ADHD. I have also developed some personal techniques and strategies in this area.
Photography is my hobby. I've taken a class and also won some awards in photography contests. Eugene Magazine also used one of my pictures. I do landscape, portrait, botanical, and travel photography. I'm always trying new subjects. I have a good eye for composition. I use a Nikon.
I have spoken to audiences of all ages for many years on a variety of subjects whether it be in a classroom, at a meeting or a conference. As a teacher, I coach my students on presentations for my classes and for Senior Thesis.
I work with students on their volume, enunciation, eye contact, posture, gestures, delivery, timing, content, visual aids and audience consideration.
I started learning Spanish in 8th grade. I have lived and studied (college level) in Spain, Costa Rica, and Mexico. I regularly assist in communications between Spanish speakers and English speakers. I'm very familiar with Spanish curriculum at the high school level.
As a foreign language teacher and tutor I have had lots of practice helping people build study skills. I have coached students both in and outside the classroom recommending a variety of strategies to prepare for tests or extract important material from a reading. I use techniques that help with memory such as reorganizing or classifying information, acting it out, association cues, etc. What works for one student doesn't always work for another. I usually try to find strategies that will work with each student's personal strengths and interests.
I swam eight years on a swim team and gave swim lessons to young children as a teenager. In college, while studying abroad, I compared the American and French approaches to teaching swimming for a paper. I am proficient in all strokes; my strongest is breaststroke. I still lap swim regularly.
I have been practicing with different teachers over a period of eight years and continue to learn. Yoga has been beneficial in my life and I want to share that with you while keeping you safe. I have experience with Iyengar, Yin and Flow styles. Though I believe the physical practice can bring about more personal or spiritual awareness, my instruction does not focus on the spiritual aspects.
