Hi, I'm D (they/them). I'm a trans/non-binary educator and debate coach who recently earned a Master's degree in the History of Science from Oregon State University. After I graduated cum laude from Franklin and Marshall College with a Bachelor's degree in History and Religious Studies, I continued to pursue my passion for research and writing through graduate studies. While earning my MA, I developed my teaching and tutoring skills through the university classroom and fostered a love of learning in my students through engaging lectures, frequent class discussions, fun review sessions, and open office hours. I've learned that a relaxed and exploratory educational environment allows students to develop analytical skills which they can apply in their own writing, research, and classwork. All learning, research, and writing is a process and I strive to make my students comfortable with and excited about large projects like research papers. I excel in developing personalized strategies to meet a student's specific needs. More than anything, I aim to teach students how to continue improving and teaching themselves.

I specialize in History, Public Speaking, Speech and Debate, ESL, Writing, Proofreading, Editing, Grammar, and Research Skills. I have experience lecturing classrooms of 50 students, directing smaller review and discussion sessions of 5-15 students, and tutoring students on a one-on-one basis.

Since 2009 I have also been a member of the National Speech and Debate Association. In high school, I competed in both speech and debate categories at national, state, regional, and invitational competitions. Since 2013, I have coached students at the high school level and served as a for-hire judge in various leagues around the country (including the NJFL, CFL, PSSDL, OMSSDL, NSDL). I also have some experience with Middle School Speech and Debate.

I encourage prospective students to schedule a brief, 10 minute online consultation session before committing to a lesson to discuss goals, learning style, and thei

I have been a member of the National Speech and Debate Association since 2009. In high school, I competed in the categories Duo Interpretation, Oral Interpretation, and Lincoln-Douglas Debate and was able to earn a slot in the national tournament three out of 4 years. During college, I spent my weekends coaching the Phillipsburg High School Speech and Debate team and working as a hired freelance judge at major NSDA tournaments (The Princeton Classic, University of Pennsylvania Tournament, etc.). During my time as a college level educator I have developed a unique research and writing methodology to assist my students. The following description comes from a syllabus I designed for students who want a clear, specific breakdown of the entire research and writing process. This extremely individualized course is designed for students from high school to graduate school and can be used as a template for work in the humanities and social sciences. Research Paper and Writing Course Description: This course is designed for students who need additional assistance with their academic research and writing skills. During this learning program, students will develop research, analytical, organizational, and writing skills to produce an 8-30-page term paper. The 4-week program is an accelerated approach for students who are already in a time crunch and are seeking additional guidance on the writing and research process. Over 4 weeks, we will have 5 separate 3-hour lessons which teach students to develop a research question, choose strong primary and secondary sources, construct an argumentative thesis statement, organize an argument, formulate a writing outline, write an introductory statement, draft the paper, and then edit and proofread the final copy. The 10-week course is perfect for students who are seeking a more relaxed timeline or are pursuing upper level and graduate research. Over 10 weeks, we will have 10 2-hour sessions which allow us to manage larger projects, work with source material in foreign languages, and get through an additional round or two of edits.

I graduated from Oregon State University's History and Philosophy of Science program in December 2019 with a 3.93 GPA. My research focused on the History of Medicine and the ethics of experimentation in Germany between 1900 and 1933. I have received significant grant support for my research, presented my work at professional conferences around the country, and helped my students incorporate this knowledge into their own written historical work. I have worked as an educator for almost 3 years in formal classroom settings, informal student driven workshops, and online tutoring sessions.

Highly Knowledgeable and patient tutor

DC is very knowledgeable about speech and debate. As my daughter just started her middle school, he clearly explained what is required and helped to select script based on our preferences and interest and age appropriate. Helped to cut the script and going to do our first performance. Thank you very much, definitely looking forward for many more classes.

Fantastic educator

When we contacted D we did not have any specific topic or discipline in mind, we were simply looking to add supplemental leaning to our son's sophomore school curriculum. D took their time to both understand our goals as parents and our son's interests. They then drafted a very thorough and diverse 8 weeks syllabus ranging from introduction to debate to psychoanalysis to WW1. D is a fantastic educator - professional, knowledgeable, engaging and challenging. Our son loves and looking forward to their next session, he always comments on D's contagious energy and being super approachable. We also appreciate D's very informative feedback after each session. Highly recommend D to any parent who wants to expand their child's horizon.

An amazing debater, but an even better coach

D has helped me through my speech and debate journey from LD to helping me learn different perspectives on argumentation and executions on those arguments. They’re immense help on argumentation has gone on to help me become a top debater.

Skilled professional, talented teacher.

D and I worked on creating an outline and goals for a graduate level paper, streamlining my annotating process, and devising specific, actionable strategies for more efficiently going from notes to sentences and paragraphs in one's own words. D is knowledgeable and patient. D. understands the parameters for graduate level science writing, but more important, knows how to clearly communicate tips, lessons, and strategies according to the student's level and needs. D. is a gifted and skilled, teacher whom I highly recommend.

Excellent, tutor knowledgeable, understanding the complexties of Social s

C. D. is an excellent tutor, very knowledgeable. Grad school writing is different, I'm willing to work hard to achieve an A in this class. C. D. tutoring will help me reach this goal. In 2018 I graduated [summa cum laude], I used tutors from Wyzant for over 3 years, through physics, french, advanced mathematics, and now social science. Thank C.D.

Knowledgeable and good at explaining

I wanted to wait for my paper to be graded but don’t want to miss my chance leave a review. D helped me write a philosophy paper that I didn’t think I could. When I was stuck on a concept D helped explain it in words I could actually understand. Highly recommend!
