As a high school AP English teacher, College Admission Ass. Director, University Writing Tutor, and Editor, I've been responding to all types of student writing for over 20 years.

Academic Writing: I individualize each session by collaborating with the student to establish the agenda and prioritize the objectives. I ask clarifying questions, indicate issues, and model solutions tailored to the unique demands of each student and each task. My in-depth analysis of writing strengths and weaknesses helps students improve the important skill of revision, the key to improving their writing. Whether I am helping them with the first steps of idea generation or polishing the final draft of a dissertation, my students find their writing is more productive, strategic, deliberate, and graceful.

PhD Dissertations: My editing in all disciplines is designed to prepare the document for submission to professional journals. I use style guides to align texts with organizational requirements. I offer 3 levels of editing, each using a multi-pass, multi-faceted process to ensure the document is correct, consistent, accurate, and complete and that the organization, visual design and the style of the document supports reader comprehension and use of the document.

SAT/ACT/AP: My approach to test prep focuses on students' mastering both the content and test-taking strategies. I create specifically targeted lessons to address each student's weaknesses. These in-depth lessons help students understand their mistakes in order to avoid making them again-- a key strategy for improving scores. After working with me, my students find that they are less stressed and retain the new reading, grammar, and writing skills they've acquired.

My ACT English tutoring plan helps students develop a strong skill set to master the three parts of the English exam: Grammar, usage, and rhetoric, Reading, and Writing. I individualize the plan to meet each student’s goal for the ACT--whether it’s to improve grammar and usage, reading, writing, or all three. English Grammar and Usage: Students learn to quickly identify and correct errors in the grammar and usage conventions typically used on the exam. These conventions, which comprise 40 out of the 75 English questions, are: Punctuation: internal and end-of-sentence punctuation, with emphasis on the relationship of punctuation to meaning and avoiding ambiguity. Marianne is truly a class act, and I have had a wonderful experience with her. I am a transfer student from a community college applying to prestigious colleges this year, so I was having a hard time finding an editor that understands the expectations and requirements for transfer students. Marianne is incredibly knowledgable about not just college admissions, but also what is needed to write amazing college essays. I worked with Marianne to brainstorm and compose all of my college essays, and Marianne assisted and mentored me so that my essays were not only amazing and interesting for the admissions reader, but also pieces of writing that I was genuinely proud of. I highly recommend Marianne; she has worked with me to get a large body of writing on my PhD dissertation done. In fact, her diligence with spurred me on to excel and to write even more. The way she made my ill-written foolishness actually look good, and her mastery of grammar and punctuation is refreshing in a day when good writing practices are lacking. DO NOT HIRE HER IF YOU DO NOT WANT TO REGRET!!!

My experience with her was a total disaster. She wasted both my time and money. She was supposed to edit and proofread my thesis. On her profile, she writes that she is professional in editing theses/dissertations, etc. Unfortunately, this information is a complete lie. She neither has excellence in academic English nor the intellectual capacity to edit and proofread academic pieces/articles. Please, don't be naive to be attracted by her promises to work with her, especially if your level is college and above. She might be a good profile to tutor a child, but she is extremely far from being an editor. Unfortunately, I had to send my thesis to another editor for a professional proofreading and editing service. She has wasted my three days (waiting for her to complete the 4 hours of work) and 200 dollars for nothing valuable in return. I explained to her that I did not apply any changes she had made as an editor since her service was deficient and shallow and that I wanted my money back. At first, she apologized to me and sent my money back by voiding the service. However, a few days later, she messaged me back and immorally refused to refund my money and said that repaying me would lower her self-esteem; thus, she recharged me $200. I have recognized that she is not just an incompetent proofreader/editor but also lacks moral qualities.

Hello Murat, I'm sorry that you were unhappy with my editing services. As I mentioned to you earlier, I reinstated the proofreading session, for which you had angrily insisted you were not going to pay, because it never should have been voided in the first place. The 4 hour proofreading session should have remained because I should have been paid for my editing work, which was superb. I only acquiesced to the vitriolic rhetoric in your messages because I saw in them all the earmarks of someone wanting to get out of paying for services they contracted for and a product they received. For the first time ever in my long, successful career as an academic editor, I felt like I was being scammed. It was easier for me to just acquiesce, void my 4 hours of editing work, and move on. However, after much deliberation and lengthy conversations with several Wyzant representatives, I realized that I shouldn't have succumbed to your bulling me into giving you what you wanted (an excellently edited draft) for free. After your refusal to pay for what you received, I should have reminded you about my many messages asking you if we could have a conversation to discuss your reaction. I should have reminded you that you gave me explicit permission in writing to do what I needed to do to "make my paper better", which I did through my suggested edits using track changes. I should have reminded you that all you would have needed to do if you weren't satisfied with a particular edit is to simply click "reject" and it would disappear. By reinstating the lesson, I am doing what is right by protecting my self-esteem and reputation as a professional editor. For nearly a decade, I've been working with graduate students, doctoral students, and university faculty from all academic disciplines. I had been trained as an academic editor at one of the best writing centers in the county.
