About Mark

I have taught Mandarin Chinese at the Foreign Languages Department, Oregon State University, as a Chinese Instructor from December 1999 until June 2013. Then I retired. I have also taught Conversational Chinese at Benton center, Linn-Benton Community College. I furthered my study at Homerton College, University of Cambridge, Cambridge, UK, and received a Certification in Education (ESL/EFL). I graduated from the Foreign Languages Department of Shandong University, Jinan, China with a B.A. My major is British and American literature and language.
I have taken Chinese courses in Modern/ Traditional Chinese Language, Chinese Writing, Literature, and History at the University. I have taught Chinese Reader Book 1-3 for the first, second and third year Chinese classes at OSU, Practical Chinese Reader at Linn-Benton Community College (LBCC), Albany, Oregon, Chinese Link-summer session for OSU students, Conversational Chinese (CHN 199) at OSU and Linn-Benton Community College, Albany, Oregon. I've used Chinese Characters New Practical Chinese Reader Book 1-4 for the first, second and third Chinese classes at OSU, Practical CHN 199 at OSU, Modern Chinese Culture and Traditional Chinese Culture classes (CHN 311, 312 and 313) in English at OSU, An Intensive Course of Chinese at University of Cambridge, Cambridge, UK, etc. I have been Oregon University System China Advisory Board Member, International Business and Professional Education and Languages for Specific Purposes, Confederation in Oregon for Foreign Languages Teaching, Reader of Critical Languages Scholarship (CLS) Program of the Council of American Overseas Research Centers (CAORC) and National Languages Services Corp (active member).

I have had much working experience in teaching both Chinese and English languages. I have taught English in the universities in China and Chinese in England and the US for many years. Due to my teaching merits, I was awarded the World Bank Fellowship and could further my study in ESL/EFL at University of Cambridge, Cambridge, UK. I have taught all the levels of Chinese language classes and Traditional/ Modern Chinese Culture (CHN 331 and 332 and 333) in English with strong enrollments at Oregon State University. My student teaching evaluations have kept always very positive. My second year students have taken Chinese Computerized Assessment of Proficiency (CAP) by Center for Applied Second Language Studies (CASLS) of the Northwest National Foreign Language Research Center for two successive years, and most of them have passed the test with very good results. I have also worked as a bilingual specialist for the National Visa Center of the US State department (security clearance has been done by the Federal agents) and chief interpreters/ translator for the World Bank and others. I have learned Modern/ Traditional Chinese language, Chinese grammar/ literature/ history at Shandong University, Jinan, China.

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
