University of Connecticut, Storrs (Biomedical Engineering)
I am trained as a biomedical engineer. While math and science form the foundation of my education, my technical course of study required that I be able to easily manipulate and apply my knowledge. My strength as a tutor lies in my ability to understand and explain concepts and techniques from multiple angles, employing varied approaches until I find the one that works best with a student's individual learning style. I am interested in learning who you, the student, are and working with you to find the methods of learning that work best for you.
I have tutored a wide range of students, from 6th graders to undergraduates. I see myself as a partner in learning rather than an instructor. While the subject matter comes first, I most enjoy helping students to develop their self-confidence and study habits.
I have studied advanced math including multi-variable calculus, differential equations, and linear algebra. I have never subscribed to the idea that there are "math people" and "non-math people." I think that math is a language which all people are fundamentally capable of understanding. Often shame and frustration become roadblocks to understanding and growth. I tutor by engaging with a student positively and exploring different approaches until we find the one that works best. By facilitating a growth mindset and maintaining an attitude of capability, I help students to engage with math in new ways and discover their own abilities.
I have extensively studied biology, chemistry, and physics on an undergraduate level. As an engineer, a sound understanding of how the world works is essential to designing and building technology to enhance it. I am passionate about understanding the complex ways in which our world behaves. I bring enthusiasm and excitement as a science tutor. My goal is to foster within students an appreciation for and curiosity about the world that will come to drive the desire to learn.
I am willing to work with middle and high school students, as well as undergraduates. I offer interviews at no charge to give you the opportunity to get a sense of how I work before booking a lesson. If you seek an engaging, knowledgeable, and responsive tutor who is interested in your needs as a learner, please contact me with questions or to schedule a lesson. Michael and I have now been meeting for a couple weeks and the confidence I have in my chemistry skills has greatly increased. For the first time, I feel like I am able to think about chemistry logically because he explains subjects in a way that fits my learning style. Not only that, but his explanations allow me to make connections to previous topics that I had an okay understanding of. Within the first session, he was able to recognize what styles work best for me. As a result, Michael adjusted his teaching style accordingly. It is clear that Michael not only loves chemistry, but he also gets excited when he sees me succeed. Michael is the kind of tutor that will not sit there and do your homework for you. Because of that, he makes sure you grasp the concept before moving on. If you are having trouble in your class Michael is a great guy to have in your corner due to his patience, professionalism, knowledge, and excitement for his students
Michael gets down to business teaching my kid geometry at our home. He is patient, optimistic, and reliable. Works with him on concepts, study skills and review. He is a top notch tutor! Recommend him highly.
My son was very excited after the first lesson and is really looking forward to continuing to work with Michael. He made a lot of progress in understanding the material in just one lesson and overall I think his confidence was greatly increased.
We contacted Michael to help our son prepare for a calculus placement test so he could get into the courses he needs for his college major. Our son had many amazing teachers during his high school years but, unfortunately, none of them taught calculus. After two years of AP Calculus in high school, our son was left unprepared, unsure of his ability to grasp the material, and unable to score high enough on a placement test to qualify for the courses he needs to complete his chosen major. After the first lesson with Michael, we got an excited call about how well the tutoring went, how our son is now confident he'll do well on the placement test, and how he has made arrangements to continue working with Michael to understand the material as he takes the calculus courses he needs. Rather than being worried and concerned, our son is now seeing an opportunity to learn. Well done Michael!
I was looking for a tutor who was able to help me with both college level Chemistry and Math. Michael is very flexible with schedule and friendly. He has an amazing way of helping you find the answer to your problems without simply telling you the answer. He is patient and has an in-depth knowledge of the subjects which makes it feel like you have your own professor sitting next to you. I would highly recommend him for any science or math classes.
My son is doing an intensive prep for AP Chem test w Michael. Michael is always prompt, congenial, interacts w my son in a calm, supportive way. He preps before every lesson. Our previous tutor **never did that! He teaches ny asking my son questions, thereby leading my son through the analysis of, and steps to solve the problems. He is not afraid to say "I don't know but I'll find oit by next lesson". I have taught, and my mom was triple credentialed. Michael shows courage and maturity in this response. We are very pleased he is working with my son.
My son (15 years old) said Michael was fantastic--did a great job of helping explain concepts and work through math problems. Very easy to work with and helpful!
Michael was punctual and reviewed concepts (oscillation and mass systems) and their interaction with momentum and inertia. It was great!
Michael is an excellent Physics tutor! In just a few sessions my grade has gone from failing to an A! I highly recommend him.
Michael has been helping me with my chemistry class. Even after the first lesson I felt like I walked away with a better understanding on the subject. Not only that, but I felt more confident in my work and it has carried over to my other classes. Michael does a great job breaking down topics and explaining them in a different way.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
