About William

Over the past five years, I've tutored a number of students, mostly in mathematics and physics. Each student is entirely unique, bringing with them their own set of skills, motivations, fears and ambitions. One of the frustrating aspects of the classical school setting is the way individual needs of students must be ignored in order to teach a greater number of people. Tutoring is a way to better meet particular educational needs. It's my goal to make sure that my tutees understand what their own learning styles are along with learning the specified materials. Math is an especially tricky subject for those with a creative or social edge, and I've developed some intuitive ways to look at logical topics to try to meet the needs of others as well as myself. Students may often feel discouraged by a difficult course and a large part of my work is reinforcing students' confidence in the face of failure, or perceived failure. Overall, I like to take a holistic, long term approach that will help people learn long after we work together.

Specifically, I've tutored math from prealgebra through college level linear algebra, including SAT/ACT math. For science, I'm very comfortable teaching physics up through college level electrodynamics. I can teach basic guitar and piano, and have an advanced understanding of songwriting and improvisation. I was employed by Study Point, a test prep company where I prepared students for the ACT, SAT, AP calculus, AP physics, and SSAT tests.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
