Lafayette College (English, Art History)
My English teachers taught me more than Shakespeare; under their guidance I learned how to form and express my own ideas, to listen carefully to the ideas of my classmates and to engage in conversation. I think that every student has the right to realize the value of her contributions, within and beyond the English classroom, and I make it my goal to illuminate her worth so she can do more with her potential.
I'm into listening. I've found that when given the opportunity, students often reveal interests and strengths that don't make it into tests and papers. During my three years spent as a college writing tutor, I learned to recognize deep reservoirs of inspiration, of individuality, and ask the open-ended questions that encouraged students to tap into these sources themselves. The goal being: develop the student, not just the paper.
Creativity resonates, and some of my most memorable moments as a student were born from an English teacher’s decision to introduce modernism with a painting, or to compare Slaughterhouse Five to Harold and Maude. Just as I have an assortment of interests (film, photography, baking, running, ballet, to name a few) so do my students; I do my best to incorporate these natural attractions into our discussions to make the lessons more effective.
Above all, tutoring is about the student. I look forward to getting to know yours and learning a thing or two, myself.

Hayley is my favorite tutor, she is so nice. Her organizational skills are wonderful. She is patient, smart, and so professional. She is flexible, perfectly bilingual and just amazing. French is my first language, and when I had difficulties, she explained material in French to me and made sure that I understood the material. She is so smart, I recommend her to everybody. She is great! I enjoyed working with her. Hayley, please keep the good work. I wish you the best. Thank you is small to express my gratitude. Thanks
Hayley has been tutoring my daughter for the past 4 months and she just loves spending time with Hayley. She is a very accommodating and responds to emails promptly. She is very patient and has a very nice and effective teaching style.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
Within my English major, I concentrated in Film Studies. In addition to analyzing frames, scenes and themes in analytical essays, I have experience with the filmmaking process; I shot and edited (using Final Cut Pro) two short documentaries for a college film class, I created short web videos about the Smithsonian Folklife Festival, and I taught filmmaking at a technology summer camp. I have taken one screenwriting class, so I have a basic knowledge of the screenwriting process.
