Learning can be fun as well as focused and productive. With each student, I work to achieve that balance by getting to know you first in order to build a cooperative work relationship. And then setting clear goals.
My methods include assessing a student's level at the beginning, and then setting clear, measurable objectives in order to focus our tutoring sessions. I like to return to the student's goals and ascertain whether we have achieved those goals or not throughout our time together. Continual assessment is important because it builds confidence and life-long skills of setting and achieving goals.
My skills and experience tutoring include subjects of reading, writing, vocabulary-building, grammar, public-speaking, typing, Spanish-speaking, English, and for ESL/ESOL students, all of the above as well as conversation and pronunciation skills.

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
Currently, I am finishing my Master's Degree in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages. I have finished my practicum and coursework for this degree and will finish my thesis in the Spring of 2012.
I have worked with several different types of students, international students intending to study English in the U.S. or Britain, immigrants who live in the U.S permanently, and students who are living abroad for a year and simply want to improve their English in order to expand future opportunities.
I have worked both as a teacher and a tutor and enjoy both. As a tutor, I have taught most skills: reading, writing, grammar, conversation, public speaking, speaking, pronunciation, and culture. I look forward to working with you on improving your English skills and achieving your goals!
Public Speaking is an important skill to develop for the professional and academic worlds. When tutoring students in Public Speaking, I help you to become more comfortable and confident in your presentation through helping you to make your message clear, and practicing eye contact, delivery, and body mechanics. And we can have fun while practicing! Public Speaking can be an exciting skill to hone, and good Public Speaking skills can impact your life profoundly.
In high school, I earned 3rd in the Oregon State Competitions for Public Speaking in the Prose category. Additionally, I have given many successful presentations in college and professionally. Finally, as a teacher and tutor, I have had to present new material in fun and engaging ways for my students! So I have lots of experience in Public Speaking.
