About Lauren

I am currently a Special Education teacher for Oregon Connections Academy.

I am in my 5th year of teaching - 1 year teaching Science and 4 years teaching Special Education. I teach with a student-centered philosophy, doing my best to ensure that my students' needs are addressed and met. My specialties are PK-12 Special Education, Elementary Math and Language Arts, Life and Health Sciences, and Social/Life Skills. I do, however, have other interests and am willing to work with students needing help with ACT Prep and elective courses such as music. I've played the violin and have participated in music since I was 6 and still continue to play in my free time.

As I mentioned, I am a special education teacher, primarily working with students who have cognitive disabilities. My experience also includes working with children with ADHD/ADD, Autism Spectrum Disorder, Other Health Impairments, TBI, Emotional Disturbances, etc.

I look forward to working with you and your child by using my expertise and experience to provide appropriate services so that your student may achieve academic success!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Basketball

My basketball experience started at the age of 9. I continued to play up until my 10th grade year of high school. I have coached basketball at a fitness camp in California for 2 different summers. Reffing youth basketball was one of my extracurricular activities in middle school.

College Counseling

I was an academic advisor for one of the dorms at a residential treatment center that I taught at. Students would come to me seeking advice on writing resumes, college applications, and test general preparation. Not all of my students that I worked with were college bound but we were able to find a community college program or vocational program that fit their needs to better equip them for a career after high school. My goal for each of my students was to find a program, whether it was a vocational school or 4-year university, that worked best for them.

Elementary (K-6th)

My teaching certificate is in K-12 Physical Education. I have worked with elementary student both in an academic setting and a recreational setting. I have created a work sample based on a class that I taught at the elementary level during my graduate program.

Fitness

I have been a personal trainer for 6 years. My bachelor's and my master's is in Exercise Science. I was certified by NESTA.

Microsoft Windows

I took a Microsoft Windows class in my undergraduate program. We were required to master all of the programs in Windows by creating documents. I use Windows with my current class on a regular basis. We look at not only using the basic functions but the more advanced functions as well.

Nutrition

My Bachelor's and Master's is in Exercise Science. My college coursework included nutrition classes specifically for advising athletes. As a personal trainer, I work with clients our their diet and eating habits on a regular basis. Helping them make right choices and learn moderation.

Softball

I started playing softball at the age of 4. My experience in softball was with both city leagues as well as traveling teams. My positions were catcher, 3rd base, and short stop.

Special Needs

I am a certified teacher working at Ozanam. Ozanam is an alternative school that specifically works with behavioral students from surrounding public schools. My students have special needs ranging from ADD/ADHD, personality disorders, bipolar disorder, PTSD, Aspergers, Autism, etc. I use differentiation to create the curriculum that I use in my classroom as well as following MO core standards for Special Education.

Study Skills

I am a certified teacher at a school for special needs. One of our main classes that we focus on is study skills. I have worked on creating a study skills curriculum that is tailored to the needs of my class.

Track & Field

I went to Truman State University on scholarship for Track & Field and Cross Country. I was a national qualifier my freshman and sophomore year for both track and cross country. I hold the 2000 meter steeplechase record for Truman State University.

Violin

I have played the violin for 22 years. In high school, I was a 1st violin in the symphony orchestra. My list of honors and awards include: 1 rating in both solos and duets at the District and State music competitions, All-district orchestra, and All-state orchestra. I continue to play the violin as an adult for weddings and other events.

Yoga

I was a camp counselor at a fitness camp in La Jolla, CA. One of my favorite classes to teach was yoga. I am also an avid Bikram yoga exerciser.

Positive first experience

Great first lesson! My daughter loved Lauren and is looking forward to her next tutoring session with her. Lauren was very patient with my daughter and taught her using a variety of teaching tools. I could tell my daughter's confidence in math increased just after one lesson with Lauren.
