About Nathan

I have over 20 years experience teaching college and high school level courses in life sciences, especially general biology and human anatomy & physiology, as well as experience in tutoring. I also have experience as a seasonal ranger and naturalist at a variety of state and national parks and forests, as well as other experience in conservation and research.

This is subject material that I know thoroughly and that I enjoy helping others understand. Every student is a unique individual, and I believe it is important to customize tutoring to the particular needs of the student in terms of focus, approach, and pace. In biology and anatomy & physiology it is important to see both the forest and the trees - to understand the broader concepts that unify the specific details as well as to learn important examples that substantiate common themes. My goal is to help students build confidence and understanding, to succeed in classes and on tests, and to make learning more fun!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Anatomy

Anatomy and Physiology (A&P) is one of the subjects within biology that I enjoy teaching and tutoring. As a college student I had classes in A&P, and as a college instructor I have taught classes in Human or Comparative A&P for many years. Human A&P courses usually take a systemic approach, exploring the dozen or so commonly recognized body systems while following common themes throughout, such as the complementary nature of structure and function or homeostatic vs pathologic conditions.

Biology

I have BS and MS degrees and over 20 years of teaching experience in biology. This is a field I find endlessly fascinating and which I enjoy helping others understand and appreciate. Biology encompasses a large number of sub fields, including molecular and cellular biology, genetics, microbiology, botany, zoology, anatomy and physiology, fish and wildlife biology, conservation biology, evolution, and ecology - along with many others.

Ecology

Ecology is one of the subjects within biology that I enjoy teaching and tutoring. As a college student I had classes in ecology, and as a college instructor I have taught classes in ecology. This is one of the most interesting and fun topics in biology and includes consideration at the population, community, ecosystem, and biome levels.

Genetics

Genetics is one of the subjects within biology that I enjoy teaching and tutoring. As a college student, I had classes in genetics, and as a college instructor, I have taught classes in genetics. This is one of the more challenging and interesting topics in biology and can include the historical development of the field from classical Mendelian to modern molecular genetics, mitosis and meiosis, structure and function of DNA and chromosomes, genes and gene regulation, and various technological and medical applications.

Zoology

Zoology is one of the subjects within biology that I enjoy teaching and tutoring. As a college student I had many classes in zoology, and as a college instructor I have taught classes in zoology. This is one of the most fascinating topics in biology and includes invertebrate and vertebrate taxonomy, comparative form and function, and the evolution, behavior, and ecology of animals.
