About Debra

I am an elementary (K-8) educator, who has just returned from the US Peace Corps where I taught English in Colombia, South America! I am also the proud mother of three grown children and was a Girl/Cub/Boy Scout leader for 11 years. During graduate school I GED tutored at the Women's Shelter in Boise, Idaho, and many students in Colombia (from young children to engineers). I also sat on the Program Development board at the College of Southern Idaho.

I believe in working closely with students in demonstrated comprehension of content material through real-life applications. The work needs to be both personal and purposeful to the student for it to be sustainable, and tutoring is an incredibly effective method to reach this goal.

I am very excited about continuing my work here in Oregon (a new home for me!) and applying my educational and cultural experience to the classroom...I have a lot to share!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Phonics

I have a master's in education and have formerly taught phonics for six years: four in public schools in Idaho and two in Colombia in the Peace Corps, including many years of working with my own children. Phonics are critical to correct pronunciation, reading and writing, and spelling, and I am a very strong advocate of this method of language learning. I have used it at all levels of language acquisition (K-teachers) and would not teach without it!

Study Skills

As an experienced educator (M.Ed), I have employed a wide range of study skills in every area and level I have taught. I teach invaluable strategies to help the student gain the most from their study time and to better and more purposefully internalize the material. These skills improve the quality of their education dramatically. Every students needs this set of skills!
