About Andrew

Hello! My name is Andrew, and I am a skilled and experienced writing and reading tutor. I have a Master's in Education from Portland State University and a Bachelor's in Broadcast Journalism from State University of New York at Brockport. I have experience teaching writing and reading at the community college level. I have a great deal of experience teaching and tutoring minority and ESL students- especially Latino, Asian, and Native American students. I have also had experience teaching and tutoring ex-offenders and students with learning disabilities. I prefer to tutor young adults and adults of any age. I am also a second generation teacher; my father is a retired public school music teacher.

I have always been an avid reader and writer, and I am very passionate about the written word. I always share my love for the written word with my students. Like many other educators, elements of my teaching philosophy can be traced directly back to my own experiences as a learner. At the small high school that I attended, I was strongly influenced by a few very dedicated teachers who always put their students first, and rarely ever thought of themselves. One-on-one attention from a skilled teacher/tutor is something that is critically lacking in American classrooms, and this is why tutoring is so important.

A key part of my teaching philosophy is that students can overcome long held fears of writing and discover the power and joy of writing. I have had success in assigning readings that I am very fond of, and also assigning readings that the individual students can identify with. This way my students discover the powerful connection between reading and writing. I am also a strong proponent of journals. A daily journal is a perfect place for self reflection, and is essential to overcoming fears of writing and strengthening writing skills. In any class that I teach, I require my students to keep a journal, and I often journal with them.

I look forward to working with you!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

CBEST

I feel that I am fully qualified to tutor people on the CBEST exam because I took the CBEST exam myself in 2006. I was required to take the CBEST as part of the Graduate Teacher Education Program at Portland State University, and to prepare for student teaching that fall. I do not recall my exact CBEST score, but I did pass it and received a score in the average to above average range.

Elementary (K-6th)

My Graduate degree is a Masters in Education in Curriculum and Instruction. It was a program designed to prepare educators to teach in the public schools in grades k - 8. My studies in this program included coursework in teaching writing, English, spelling, grammar and other subjects to students in grades k - 8. I also have done a lot of tutoring of elementary aged students in these subjects.

General Music

My father is a retired music teacher and classical violinist, and I played upright bass from age 8 to about age 21. My father began teaching me, and I then began taking private lessons at the Eastman School of Music. I was a member of a youth orchestra that performed symphonic music. For the past twenty years, I have been reading and studying jazz music, and I am currently the host of a weekly jazz radio show in Portland Oregon on KMHD 89.1 FM. I consider myself a jazz historian, and I have taught a college course in jazz history. As a result of my father's influence and my own studying, I am also very knowledgeable on general music history.

Macintosh

As I have stated in previous sections, I worked for Xerox from 1994 to 2000 in networked printer tech support. During these years I had access to multiple operating systems including Mac OS 9, OS 10, and all subsequent versions of OS 10. I have owned two Macbook computers (both Macbook Pros) over the past three years and I consider myself not an expert user, but an above-average user.

Microsoft Outlook

I worked for Xerox Corporation from 1994 to 2005 in technical support for laser printers in which I did troubleshooting of network connectivity problems involving printers. From 2002 to 2005 I did "E-Mail Support" in which I answered e-mail inquiries from customers and salespeople who wanted to know if a printer would print correctly from a specific software application or operating system. This e-mail support was done using Microsoft Outlook Professional. I quickly became an expert user and I have maintained this proficiency to this day.

Microsoft Windows

I have been using computers and Microsoft Windows since the early 1990's, and I worked for Xerox Corporation from 1994 to 2005 in technical support for laser printers in which I did troubleshooting of network connectivity problems. During these years, I used Windows 3.1, Windows NT, NT server, Windows 2000, Windows 95, and all subsequent versions up to Windows XP on a daily basis. Since then I have used all versions of Windows up to and including Windows 8.

Music History

My father is a retired music teacher and classical violinist, and I played upright bass from age 8 to about age 21. My father began teaching me, and I then began taking private lessons at the Eastman School of Music. I was a member of a youth orchestra that performed symphonic music. For the past twenty years, I have been reading and studying jazz music, and I am currently the host of a weekly jazz radio show in Portland, Oregon on KMHD 89.1 FM. I consider myself a jazz historian, and I have taught a college course in jazz history. As a result of my father's influence and my own studying, I am also very knowledgeable on general music history.

Study Skills

I feel that I am more than qualified to tutor in Study Skills. My most recent teaching job was teaching Developmental Writing and Reading at the community college level. These students either just barely graduated high school or had been out of school for many years and lacked basic study skills, time management, how to balance family/personal life and studies. I have a great deal of experience and success in this.

Writing

I have always loved the written word and I have been a voracious reader since childhood. I am a graduate of the Graduate Teacher Ed program at Portland State, and a major part of my studies were in the teaching of writing, reading, and study skills to children in grades 4 through 12. I also have training in, and strong knowledge of, children's literature.
