About Grace

I am so glad that you are here, seeking help. It is an admirable step to achieving success, and I am honored to be a part of helping you along that process. Let me tell you a little about myself: My name is Grace R., and I am both a tutor and teacher. I hold an M.A. in Applied Linguistics and a B.A. in English linguistics. What does that mean for you? That means I am passionate about language, and about applying that knowledge to help people with real problems. I have a strong background in tutoring in the private and public sector, tutoring for over 6 years in English, TESOL, Spanish, and Linguistics, and even math and science too. Language makes my mind come alive, because I know that my knowledge can be used to help others overcome battles with the language they working with. But knowledge isn't everything. I know that we have great potential to work together because I understand where you and/or your student is coming from. I am the epitome of the "victory story." I have failed classes and repeated them, and still graduated with honors. I have taken tests over and over until I understood the strategy and material well enough to master them. But most of all, I've overcome difficulties and challenges in my life I never thought I could. That puts me in a unique position to help you. What's your story? What can I do to help you overcome your challenges? I am so glad that you are here, seeking help. Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Anthropology

My M.A. in Applied Linguistics was part of an interdisciplinary program with the Department of Intercultural Studies and the Department of Anthropology for Biola University. I also work as an Adjunct Professor for the Department of Anthropology at Vanguard University, teaching Language in Cultural Context - this course applies linguistics to the study of culture (which is Anthropology in its core.)

CBEST

I have CBEST certification myself and have been through the exam process. I also possess several years of education and teaching that prepare me to teach others about the CBEST test material.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have worked with students ages K-adult for over 6 years. Elementary students are at the very beginning stages of development and have unique needs. I have worked as a consultant for a non-profit organization, teaching children in grades K-6 in phonetics, sound production, alphabet recognition, and memory skills. I also partner in instructing adults how to help their children learn. Additionally, I develop curriculum for homeschool families who do not know how to individualize curriculum for their families. I have been creating curriculum for the past 3 years, as well as helping families utilize what they already have and highlighting unmet needs. Children need someone to engage them, but also make learning enjoyable. I have experience doing both in my tutoring business. Parents might feel more comfortable knowing that I was a nanny for young children too.

Phonics

Phonics is very challenging for a lot of people. My emphasis in my graduate program is in literacy, and have taken classes in writing, spelling, phonetics, and more. By understanding how the mouth works, I can help you feel and process sounds in the language much easier. I use many different methods, including brain gym and kinesthetic styles, to help people of all levels.

Special Needs

I have worked with students with special needs for several years. Additionally, my linguistics background gives me unique knowledge on the socio-linguistic development of children with disabilities. I worked as a linguistic consultant for a non-profit autism center which educated parents on developing curriculum, treatment options, and nutrition. Finally, I develop curriculum for homeschool families; most recently for a military family with three children with Aspergers.

Speech

Having a strong background in linguistics helps me to understand not only the anatomy of the mouth, but the articulatory requirements for speech production. Additionally, as stated elsewhere, I worked as a linguistics consultant for a non-profit autism center. I have also job shadowed speech therapists and pathologists for nearly 75 hours.

Knowledgeable tutor who will meet your needs

I have had multiple sessions with Grace for last several months. As I finished graduate degree in engineering in the U.S., I do not feel particular difficulties in communication within the company I currently work in. But I have always felt a need for improvement in English in advanced level, so I contacted Grace as I thought her background in linguistics could help me achieve my goal. So far,
