About Nicole

Hello!

I have a Master of Arts in English – TESOL and a Bachelor of Arts in Liberal Studies. I will also earn a second Bachelor of Arts in Special Education with a dual teaching credential pending one semester of student teaching.

I have passed the following exams: CBEST (basic skills), PRAXIS 1 (basic skills) and PRAXIS II (special education and elementary education).

I have worked in the classroom since 2005 in the following capacities: graduate teaching assistant, English/ESL tutor, teacher of record (ESL, general and special education) and adjunct professor at a community college.

With respect to my personal attributes, I am a genuinely caring and personable teacher/professional who takes time to get to know and to build positive relationships with my students.

I have had the opportunity to teach students from pre-k through adults (native English speakers, ESL, and special education) from diverse cultural, educational, and socioeconomic backgrounds in both private and public schools. I began my ESL teaching career in the multi-cultural cities of San Francisco and Oakland, California, where I was a student teacher at two community colleges, as well as an ESL instructor at a private language institute.

Once I graduate from San Francisco State University, I will have worked in the capacity of an adjunct ESL instructor at Pasadena Community College (PCC) where I implemented the use of researched-based, learner-driven methodology in the areas of academic reading, composition, and grammar. While at PCC, my supervisor chose me to create a curriculum, instructional materials, and to teach a three-week long summer language immersion program to visiting college students from PCC’s sister university in Taiwan.

From 2008 through 2013, I worked for the Hawaii Department of Education in the capacity of an ESL tutor and a substitute teacher, which enabled me to further develop my cross-cultural understanding of diverse learners. Finally, working with and learning about students with special needs has aligned well with my experience and studies in TESOL. I am more cognizant of the unique and innate strengths, attributes, and needs of individual learners, and how to capitalize on those strengths and attributes via a wide range of differentiated instructional strategies, sheltered English instruction, and scaffolding.

Thank you for reading my bio. I look forward to assisting you in reaching your academic goals.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
