I have been teaching for 35 years at the high school level. I have taught math, Algebra I & II, language arts, Senior Writing, Advanced Placement English Composition, literature, speech, poetry, and photography. I often work with ESL students, and have taught students from China, Korea, Singapore, Italy, France, Spain, Germany, and Chile. I love helping students learn and succeed.
I am a prolific writer. I have written and published 30 books. I am also a drama director. I often adapt famous plays from the past so students can perform dramas that are intellectually challenging and informative. I wrote about directing and producing plays. I wrote a book called "Teaching AP Language and Composition."
When I tutor, I work along with the student so answers and intellectual strategies can be compared. In this way, students can clearly see how I approached the exact same issues faced by them.
I currently tutor several students in Salem in math, reading, and writing. I have many resources to offer students, although usually they work with the books assigned to them by their school.

My son is about to start second grade, and he has struggled in school from the very beginning. My son has dyslexia, dysgraphia and ADD. When my son and Rolf had begun working together, my son was tested by his school to see where he was academically. At that time, he was testing at an early first grade level. Since school is about to start, we tested again. In the 3 months that they have been working together my son has improved an entire grade level! He is now at a mid second grade level! Such a dramatic improvement! I am so thankful to have found a tutor that tailors the lessons around the needs of the child, and with such tremendous patience. My son's confidence has improved and he is so very proud of himself! I am so thankful that Wyzant has led us to Rolf!
Rolf is patient and is teaching my son to do more math in his head to increase his speed for timed tests.
Thank you very much!!
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have taught high school students for 30 years. I have worked with about ten different ADD/ADHD students. Most obtained modified academic requirements while they participated in the standard classroom. Some obtained books on tape to listen to at home. I met with families often to assess progress and consider means of better assisting the students. I tutored a college student who suffered from a case of extreme autism. I have taught students who have occasional seizures in class. I listen carefully and offer direction as best I can.
I have studied economics at The Foundation for Economic Education in Irvington-on-Hudson, New York. I have studied economic principles for 30 years, and am familiar with the functions of free market economics, supply and demand, profit and loss, and investment strategies. I have a Bachelor's degree and a Master's degree. I truly enjoy studying the role of business in society, because those who engage in business create jobs for workers, create innovation of new products, and create increased wealth due to innovation and increased productivity. Efficient business practices lead to prosperity and employment for the benefit of consumers and workers.
I have often tutored students in preparation for taking the GED test. I worked in Hawaii assisting students who had dropped out of high school. I have tutored at-risk students from both Albany high schools in math, reading, vocabulary and other basic skills. I like to see students succeed, and am able to give them the encouragement and training they need.
I can teach phonics. I have been teaching reading, literature, and writing for 25 years. I have taught Advanced Placement English Composition as well. I have taught students in elementary school up through high school.
I have taught Speech Class at the high school level for several years. I tutored a college student last summer who was having issues with stage fright and focus in his course. I have been a frequent public speaker, and served as vice-president of my university. I have taught Drama Class for 20 years, and have directed more than 60 plays, emphasizing diction, projection, articulation, and voice for all the actors on stage.
I have worked with special needs students often during my 33 years of teaching experience. I also taught high school dropouts in Hawaii as a VISTA Volunteer, and I taught students in grades 5-6 in a school in an impoverished inner-city area in Louisville, Kentucky. Students there had a variety of very special needs due to broken families, drug abuse, single parents, and psychologically troubled young people. I have a wide variety of experience teaching various races and income groups, as well.
I have taught high school speech classes for ten years. My students generally delivered a three-minute speech at least three times per week, so they obtained lots of speaking practice. I assigned topics that did not require research. I allowed them to speak from personal experience so they would possess knowledge of their subject and personal interest in the topic. I scored their speeches for projection, eye-contact, gesture, movement, enthusiasm, and voice variation.
I assigned a topic daily but gave them the choice to speak on another topic if they had something special to share. One former student wrote the following remark after attending Oregon State University: "I took a speech class this last term in college, and I have to say, the one I took from you in high school taught me WAY more, truly prepared me to give future speeches, and I had a blast in the process. Thank you for teaching. You shook life up and kept it exciting." --Elle
