The University Of Oklahoma (Arabic)
My name is Parker. I graduated from the University of Oklahoma with a double major in Middle Eastern Studies and Arabic. I have traveled and study abroad extensively in the Arab World, including countries such as Morocco, Egypt, Jordan, and Qatar. I just returned from a year-long study abroad program in Alexandria, Egypt and am looking apply the skills that I have acquired. I can read, speak, understand, and write Modern Standard Arabic and I am comfortable in Egyptian Colloquial Dialect. In addition to Arabic, I am interested in history, politics, literature, and music. I also play guitar and mandolin.
I also have experience in tutoring Arabic; I worked as language tutor and teacher assistant for the University of Oklahoma Arabic Flagship program from January 2011-May 2012. I genuinely enjoy tutoring and teaching not only because I help other people in their education, but also because I have an opportunity to learn from them as well.
Although I do not have a set in stone method for tutoring, I believe that learning languages such as Arabic require an early focus on its phonology; Arabic contains many sounds that do not exist in the English language and therefore it is important that much time be spent learning these difficult sounds. That is not to say that the student of Arabic can not begin to learn words, phrases, and sentences until he or she has mastered pronunciation; rather, a solid foundation in the basic sounds of Arabic will make learning Arabic much easier and more pleasant in later stages. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I graduated from the University of Oklahoma with a double major in Middle Eastern Studies and Arabic. I am an Arabic Language Flagship scholar and received a scholarship from the government to study abroad in Meknes, Morocco in the summer of 2011 and in Alexandria, Egypt from June 2012-May 2013. I also tutored in the Arabic Language Flagship Program at OU from January 2011-May 2012. I am currently awaiting my Interagency Roundtable Language (ILR) proficiency scores which I hope to receive this month.
