About Jeff

My biggest asset as a tutor is creativity. That being said, certain attributes are staples of teaching: communication, repetition, and consistency. Within that realm, often being able to express an idea in multiple ways is the trick for understanding. I think I’m good at breaking things down to a rudimentary level and rephrasing when needed. Also, having experienced learning difficulties as a child (which were long ago rectified) forced me to become very skilled at developing personalized learning strategies. And having learned from experience how to elevate my own standardized test score from the 32nd percentile to the 85th percentile on the MCAT has been invaluable for teaching peers how to approach a difficult test and succeed.

I am a current student pursuing a Master of Biology Degree at Northeastern State University, who would someday like to become a physician. I have been the leader of various Skype study groups for MCAT preparation for over a year where I have greatly enhanced the plan of study as well as enabling peers to score even higher than I myself previously scored on the MCAT. For me, it's almost a drive to propel colleagues and tutees to the best academic level that a world of knowledge can deliver.

-Current M.S. student of Biology at Northeastern State University
-B.S.M.E. 2008, mechanical engineering, University of Tulsa
-Published author for several chapters at StatPearls concentrating on various biochemistry/physics topics

I'm here to challenge myself as well as you; the world's too big of a place for one person to know everything, therefore I expect to be forced to learn myself at times a new concept as it surfaces. Although I'm quite comfortable serving as the dictator of a rigorous study plan, more retention is accomplished through dialogue than monologue. For this reason I say now and will again--please let me know how I can help you!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Chemistry

I recently mastered general chemistry I & II in preparation for my MCAT, in which I received a score in the top 1% of the Chemistry/Physics section. I have been helping peers with chemistry for the last 2 years, demonstrating superior techniques for properly solving each type of problem; as test speed and performance is rated highly in society, this has been my focus. Hard qualifications include a bachelor's in mechanical engineering from the University of Tulsa and a masters in biology from Northeastern State University (currently in progress).

MCAT

I have been helping my peers in a Skype MCAT study group since 2015. My peers and myself have received good scores (511 for myself, 513 for two friends, 514 another). I understand fundamental changes in studying which often have a profound effect, as I figured out how to elevate my score from the 32nd percentile to the 86th percentile. I can forward a copy of my verifiable MCAT score report upon request.

Organic Chemistry

During my studies, the concepts of organic chemistry became second nature to me immediately; along with completing every problem in Organic Chemistry as a Second Language I/II, I have studied Ochem from multiple textbooks in order to better explain the subject and scored top in my class for both organic chemistry I and II. In the lab, I had some of the highest percent yields and regularly mastered the subsequent reports. I truly love this subject and it is a pleasure to help others see chemistry in such a way that reveals its secrets.

Physics

I received my B.S. M.E.-Mechanical Engineering from the University of Tulsa in 2008, where I studied physics I, II, and III. The excellence of my recent review of physics for the MCAT is reflected in scoring in the 99th percentile on the Chemistry/Physics section. Since April I have been tutoring college physics and have been a real game-changer for my students.
