About Domonique

I am currently an AmeriCorps Member, offering in school help to students who fall behind in Math and or English. I offer after school tutoring as well, all through a educational non-profit organization called City Year. With this program, my training's included building student relationships, mandated reporting, and identifying different learning styles. As a Corps Member, I am in class with the students all day everyday keeping them on track, and working with them either one on one or in small groups in case they are having trouble keeping up with the teacher. By doing this, the teacher can continue with the lesson and not fall behind. I am confident that I can be very successful as a tutor specifically in English. English has been my strongest subject all throughout high school and college. English was also my highest scoring subject on the ACT.

I have a Bachelor's degree in theater with concentrations in Performance/Directing and Dance. Right after graduation, I got a job teaching dance to children and adults which consisted of Ballet, Tap, and Jazz. After that, I got selected to dance with a new dance collective in New Orleans and I danced with them for a year. During my time in college I attended the Urban Bush Women SLI and the American College Dance Festival Association (ACDFA) where I took numerous master classes and danced in a concluding culminating performance. I also choreographed 5+ pieces for both my senior dance concert and small class projects. I have at least 5 years of training under my belt in both technique and performance.

I am all about giving back when I can and helping others when they need it. I've been teaching for the past two years and I plan to make it a permanent part of my life in the future. As a teacher I know that every student learns differently and I try to cater to those needs. With my Dance teaching, I make sure to provide a physical example of a specific combo or movement that we are learning. This method is specific to those that are visual learners, and for those who are kinesthetic learners I walk them through it step by step. I make sure to give direction in the most basic way possible so that they'll understand and can do it for themselves. Lastly, for those that are auditory learners I go over the movement with the music or I'll just break down the pattern rhythmically. This way the student will know which part of the phrase to hit and at what time to hit it. I am confident in my ability to apply these methods to my tutoring in core subjects.

In high school, I took Honors English all four years and accomplished mostly A's and B's. In college, my strong suits in English were research papers. I also took a Dance movement class and for the final I had to connect Bharatanatyam to the life of the Safari and was very successful. What makes my reading skills good is my attention to detail and my innate nature to analyze the Text.

Being a theater major in college helped me a lot with this because we mostly read Greek and Roman text so it wasn't always easy to understand. I also specialize in Biology with my lowest grade coming to a B in high school, and a B in college. I am currently not enrolled in any of these classes, but I am taking Human Anatomy so I do have to go back to the basics sometimes. I enjoy teaching because I learn more about myself everyday and It helps me as I am also hoping to get certified to teach Theater and English in the next few years. In high school, I also became a member of the National Honor Society, received a Presidential Education Award, and took part in Community Service. In college I made the Dean's List and graduated with a cumulative 3.2 GPA.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Ballet

I have a Bachelor's degree in Theater with concentrations in Performance/Directing and Dance. Right after graduation, I got a job teaching dance to children and adults which consisted of Ballet, Tap, and Jazz. After that, I got selected to dance with a new dance collective in New Orleans and I danced with them for a year. I also choreographed 5+ pieces for both my senior dance concert and small class projects. I have at least 5 years of training under my belt in both technique and performance. I am currently on the road to getting my Master's in Dance Movement Therapy from an accredited University.

Sewing

I spent a lot of time working on the costuming aspect of the theater. It was a requirement to get acquainted with a backstage part of the theater. My backstage focus was primarily costuming. I was the wardrobe head for numerous shows, as well as served on the wardrobe team for the shows in which I was not in charge. The majority of my work study took place in the costume shop. In the costume shop I learned basic stitches and their respected names and uses, I learned other things such as making a pattern, a waist belt, and what to use in case of a wardrobe emergency. I also took up sewing as a personal hobby. I have my own personal sewing machine.

Theatre

I graduated from Northwestern State University with a Bachelors degree in Theater. Some of my courses included Movement for the Actor, Advanced Acting, Stage Combat, and Theater History. In Theater History we studied Greek and Roman Theater mostly. I am very familiar with plays such as Agamemnon, Oedipus Rex, and Tartuffe. I Can help with breaking down and understanding what the playwright is trying to say through a process called Script Analysis. I can help get you familiar with Icons such as Stella Adler, Lee Strasberg, and Constantin Stanislavski. I would also help other students who were having trouble with certain tools like emotional or sensory recall. I've been involved in the theater since I was a little girl, and I've also had some experience in TV production as well.

Writing

I am proficient in Writing and English. They were the top scores on my ACT exams in high school. In college my English grades ranged between the A and B average for majority of that career. I also took various History classes and my papers ranged between A and B average on those as well.
