What do you look for in a tutor? As a mother who has raised three children with learning disabilities, I can identify with wanting the best. I returned to college to become that person. Because of my strong work and study ethic, I graduated with highest honors (Summa Cum Laude), majoring in English and History. I pass these ethics on to my students for there is no greater sense of accomplishment than seeing a student succeed. I have a true heart for children and families and I am committed to excellence in every session.
I am a member of Phi Beta Kappa (top 1% of college students) and Phi Alpha Theta (History Honor Society). I have taught Elementary School, Middle School, and High School as a substitute teacher, specializing in English, Reading, Writing, History, and Social Studies. As a retired law enforcement professional, I have also taught numerous adult classes in Criminal Justice and Report Writing.
I am always studying the best techniques for teaching students. I understand that learning styles differ between students and I adjust my lessons to reflect the needs of each individual student. I look forward to your feedback to help me meet your needs. I have flexible schedules for your benefit, but I do require a 24-hour advanced notification should you need to cancel a session. Make-up lessons are available.
To relieve some of the stress you encounter daily, I will come to your location for tutoring sessions or arrange another nearby public location for lessons.

Ms. Valerie A. is a great tutor. She was very knowledgeable in History while tutoring my daughter who is a college sophomore. She helped her to fully understand the important aspects of every chapter. Ms. Valerie is very dedicated and punctual. As a result, my daughter received an A in the class.
Thank you for your kind comments. It was truly my honor to work with your daughter.
All the best,
I got help from Ms.Valerie for my daughters STAAR writing and comprehension. It has been a wonderful experience with her. She made everything very easy for my daughter from brainstorming ideas to finishing with great conclusions. She listens to the ideas of kids very patiently and tells them what was right or wrong. I like that part of her. So my daughter got more open and would listen to Valerie even better. I really appreciate all her time and efforts. Thanks a lot Valerie.
Valerie has been tutoring our 11-year-old in reading now for 6 months. We home school our children and his reading struggles were heartbreaking as he was really trying. I could see the panic in his eyes when his grandparents asked him to read his birthday card out loud last year. We met with Valerie as a family for the first time and our son really didn't know what to think. After a few lessons, it was evident that they were bonding and he was attempting some reading techniques that she was teaching him. Valerie advised us that our son was exhibiting some dyslexic traits and she asked us if we had ever had him tested. We had not so she asked if it would be okay to try using techniques used to teach dyslexic readers. Our son has not only responded, but his reading level has improved to the point where he is now - 6 months later - reading books at his grade level. She has helped him totally change his outlook on reading and increased his confidence. Thank you Valerie! God bless you!!!!
Thank you! I am blessed to be a part of helping your son succeed. He is a joy to teach!
We have used Valerie since September to tutor our 10th grader in English. Valerie is a very patient and thorough tutor. My child quickly attained an A in English and has maintained it. She is prompt and professional and more than willing to work whenever she is needed. If something special happened that we needed extra help she was willing to accommodate us. I would highly recommend her.
Thank you for your review. I’ve loved every minute of helping your 10th grader shine in English class. Seeing that confidence bloom and grow is a wonderful reward for me.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
First of all, I love American History. One of my majors for my degree from UT Austin is in History, with an emphasis in American Studies. I graduated with highest honors (4.0 GPA) and I'm also a member of the Phi Alpha Theta History Honor Society. Furthermore, my second major in English (4.0 GPA), gives me a unique opportunity to assist students in writing assignments, which are prevalent in History studies.
I have twenty-five years of service in law enforcement, which includes teaching multiple police academies, including LSU Basic Academy, Louisiana State Police Academy, Baton Rouge Police Academy and more. I taught report writing skills (grammar, vocabulary, spelling, paragraph structure, writing for court testimony, etc.), and preparing for the traumas of law enforcement.
I graduated with highest honors from UT Austin with a degree in English and History. I am an excellent writer, communicator, and listener. I have a heart to share my skills with others to help them succeed. Several of my professors have used my papers as demonstrations of proper writing skills for their classes.
I have a B.A. in history and English from UT Austin and graduated with highest honors. My course load included classes in European history, including holocaust, Tudor England, and also Danish history, through my Accelerated Danish language courses. I have traveled through many European countries and have personal knowledge of historical sites and information. I have strong skills in writing, a necessary component for Historical paper writing.
