Hello Prospective Student:
I am excited to help you find your way through school and through life. I have a lot of experience helping students with steps tailored to their needs. Developing a relationship with both the student and their parents is very important to me. Our first meeting will be a question and answer session introduction, followed by any specific learning and/or homework questions. I will be as open and honest as possible about my qualifications with you and your parents. In other words, you and your parents need to feel comfortable with me as a tutor.
Previously, I worked for the public school district as an elementary teacher assistant helping students who had fallen behind in their schoolwork. I tutored slow learners in elementary mathematics at a public elementary school for 2 years, primarily in regard to phonics-based reading skills. After this position ended due to lack of funding, I continued as a 1:1 tutor in the homes of these students as a privately funded tutor, specifically in the areas of physical sciences, mathematics, and history. In more recent times, I have tutored junior high and high school students in the subjects of algebra, reading (including phonics), and career counseling. My expertise as a teacher in relational settings has helped me achieve a definite measure of success. I strive to not only help students succeed, but to gain confidence and self-worth for their lives.
Thank you for considering me as your tutor. I look forward to helping you achieve success and confidence in your studies.
Thomas (Tom) Hello Prospective Student:
I am excited to help you find your way through school and through life. I have a lot of experience helping students with steps tailored to their needs. Developing a relationship with both the student and their parents is very important to me. Our first meeting will be a question and answer session
Our daughter really likes Tom, and responds well to his approach. She is approaching her assignments with more confidence. She was failing Algebra II, and has brought it up to a passing grade within 3 weeks of sessions with Tom.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have a Bachelor in Theology (Th.B.) from 1988, and have made use of this degree in various religious settings, in church, outside group presentations, and in prison settings.
I have a very good grasp of chess principles and strategy. My rating has consistently been near 1500 for a number of years. I am currently teaching my 18 year old daughter the opening and end games, with a view to middle game strategies. I enjoy this game very much and enjoy teaching its finer aspects.
I have extensive experience with young people. When I was in Alaska, I was a teaching assistant for slow learners in elementary school, and when the school year ended, I went to individual's homes (based on recommendations by the Anchorage School District teacher, and the corresponding parent). I can relate well to young people, in order to earn their trust, which I find is a foundational aspect of successful tutoring. While in Tulsa, Oklahoma, I applied for the Early Childhood Development Center Coordinator position last year, but was turned down due to lack of funding and a newly-instituted "hire from within" policy. I would welcome this opportunity to help young people develop their skills. You will note I am already approved for Elementary Science, English, Geography, and a host of other subjects. I would therefore appreciate being approved for this Subject area. Thank you for your time and consideration in this matter.
My degree from the University of Michigan is in Physical Sciences (I graduated with a 3.30 GPA). In addition, I have been gifted with an ability to teach younger students how to find their way through the maze(s) of science.
I have very good skills in Microsoft Word, and am continuing to be trained in the advanced features. I would be delighted to provide tools for you, to help you in this program.
I have an excellent grasp of the English language with regard to changing word definitions and pronunciation exceptions that govern the English language.
I have extensive public speaking experience, including announcing for four (4) different AM radio stations and speaking to groups of inmates three (3) times per week (the latter being up to the present day).
I have excellent comprehension skills with regard to reading and writing. If the same English word has more than one definition, this is fully accounted for in my studies and tutoring.
I have an excellent grasp of the English language with regard to speaking and writing. I also have published two books (information available upon request). My studies have encompassed the unabridged Oxford Dictionary (English word origins and changing definitions therein).
