About Jeremy

My name is Jeremy and I am a second year graduate student in the department of philosophy at Oklahoma State University, Stillwater, OK. As a second year fully-funded graduate student, I am entering my second year teaching 100-level university courses. I currently teach PHI 1213 - Philosophies of Life, which I tell my students is 'a comprehensive introductory survey of the philosophical branch known as Ethics or Moral Philosophy'. As a philosopher, my research interests are applied ethics, social and political philosophy, and epistemology. I am also competent to tutor in the philosophy of religion (namely 'the problem of evil'), metaphysics, and elementary logic.

Whether as a lecturer or a tutor, my interest is in student development. That is to say, I employ methods to help you develop as a 'thinker' by aiding you in learning the material, not just memorizing it. I make sure to relate the material to you in a way you best understand it. I am very patient. As my track-record shows, I am respectful of all personal beliefs as they pertain to the material, but will make certain to help you make these beliefs more coherent. What is more, I am also successful at helping non-majors understand not only how to do philosophy, but how to engage it in their lives.

Note: I found philosophy in the 'science' box and so naturally checked it.

I have experience working under the scope of the scientific method in my undergrad studies as a sociology major. From my philosophical point of view, I also understand that while there is no actual 'the' scientific method, there is a need for demarcation between that which is testable and that which is not.

As a writer who engages with philosophical scholarship and a lecturer who grades hundreds of papers, I am astute at forming grammatical writings and proof-reading. I proof read hundreds of papers each semester, including my own. I also give hundreds of comments, as I am a meticulous grader in the sense that I cannot help but pour every bit of my care into each student's paper.

I am definitely the right tutor for you if you want a sincere and patient tutor who is also happens to have current experience teaching at the university level! Please do not hesitate.

Best,
Jeremy

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Philosophy

I currently earn a stipend and free tuition in exchange for graduate teaching duties at Oklahoma State University in Stillwater, OK. I trained rigorously in philosophy during my undergrad stints at Brandman and Arizona State universities respectively. As of now, I am in the midst of independently structuring my own course, which will closely tie into my thesis currently under research (a project that has three esteemed philosophers on its committee). Furthermore, I have one full school year under my belt lecturing, grading, administering tests and exams, and providing office hours help to college students (Freshman to Senior).

What is more, feel free if you have any further questions or need any kind of verification of my credentials and/or affiliations.

Sociology

I hold a B.A. in sociology from Brandman University of the Chapman University System. Before committing myself to philosophy, I turned down a funded offer from New Mexico State University to attend graduate school there as a GTA. A paper of mine was selected as a poster to attend the annual Western Philosophical Association in spring 2012 (or 2013) Conference, which was largely a social psychology piece. Finally, I teach my philosophy classes with a predominately social philosophic tone that centers on related sociological matters like imperialism, neocolonialism, inequality, et cetera.

Study Skills

I am a current graduate student who receives a stipend and free tuition in exchange for graduate teaching at Oklahoma State University. I teach 100-level courses, which entails my instruction of study skills during office hours and after class. I have two methods I would like to share with you.

First, I have my students write one page expositions or exegeses (double spaced) on readings I assign. Secondly, I encourage the use of thesauruses, which improves one's ability to rewrite information they adduce from their sources. This practice help avoid 'false positives' on plagiarism detection software as well as over quoting sources. Accordingly, I aim to help students learn the material rather than simply memorizing it.
