I have been a public school teacher for 23 years. I have a BS in Early Childhood Education, and a MS in Education in Reading. I am certified to teach grades PK-3, Elementary 1-8, Reading Specialist PK-12, Language Arts 6-8, and Social Studies 6-8.
I have many experiences working with children to build their self-esteem and enhance their reading skills. I do this through assessments, games, books, and many activities to build reading skills. Tutoring will be a new setting for me; however, the thrill of it for me and the student is that moment when it all clicks and that student knows they have reached success.
I have taught language arts for grades PK-2 for twenty three years. I am a good proof reader and colleagues often ask me to proof read their letters, papers, etc. I have a Masters in reading and utilize it to enhance reading and vocabulary.
I have taught PK-2 phonics for twenty three years. I use music and games to enhance student success with this skill. I am trained in Literacy First and will utilize its philosophy of phonological awareness, as well as phonics skills to tutor. Phonological awareness is the ability to hear sounds as they are. If a child does not possess this skill, it has to be enhanced in order for phonics skills to develop.
I have taught PK-2 spelling for twenty three years. I use games, music, and manipulative activities to build words to make the words real for students.
I am looking forward to hearing from students and being able to work with them to enhance their reading abilities. Reading is an important skill that opens up the world to the reader. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I am qualified to teach phonics, because I hold a Master's Degree in Reading. I have also taught in the early childhood grades of PK-2 for the past 23 years. I use games and activities to help children with sound recognition. I work on phonological awareness activities first to determine if children are hearing individual sounds. I am trained in Literacy First.
