About Virginia

Are you having problems understanding important information? I am Virginia, and I can fix your problems. I am a former college instructor, over 20 years, primarily teaching in technical and business areas. I have two associate degrees, a BS in Technical Management, and an MBA. The BS and MBA were a 4.0 GPA. I have taken many standardized tests, including the PSAT, ACT, ASVAB, GMAT, and LSAT, and I have scored in the 98th or 99th percentile on each one. There are helpful hints and tricks to taking these tests, and I can train you to get scholarships winning scores!
As an instructor and corporate trainer, I felt I specialized in motivating students to conceive and achieve their goals. I have studied the science of how students learn information, and I know how to effectively explain concepts so students not only learn short-term, but also retain the information longer, and can apply the concepts to real situations. I like to make learning fun and easy, so my students are eager to jump right in! I also feel that if you are having problems learning information, it doesn't mean you are a failure, no matter what you've been told in the past. It actually is, in my opinion, the teacher's failure, because they couldn't present the material in a way you could understand it. I can help you with many subjects, and offer assistance with other issues, such as choosing college courses or a career direction, developing study or testing skills, and goal-setting or self-assessment. You will be thrilled when you finally believe in your abilities!

I love taking tests so much that I wish I could do it for a living! I get great scores on every test I take, because I have learned that preparation is critical. I have counseled hundreds of students for over twenty years, and taught thousands, every age, sex, background, and nationality imaginable, so every student success was also my success.

I am an outstanding tutor of business, technical, and general education subjects because I listen to my students, determine why they are having issues, and help them develop not only specific subject knowledge, but also skills they can apply to any task. I have had many students take multiple courses with me because they felt I made learning, even difficult or complicated material, fun and relatively painless. My business and economics courses were so popular, students often were faced with a waiting list in order to enroll.

You have decided that you are needing help in certain areas, and I can certainly provide you with the specific help you need. If you are willing and ready to improve your life, all I ask is that you listen and be ready to trust me enough to follow my directions and put in the effort needed to achieve the success you deserve! My schedule is extremely flexible, and I am willing to work with you any days and times that best fit your schedule. If you are ready, then I am willing and able! Please contact me and tell me what I can do for you, and you may soon start believing you are as brilliant as I know you are!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Business

I have an AAS degree in Supervisory Management, a BS in Technical Management, and an MBA, all conferred with High Honors, and all requiring intensive study of various business courses and concepts. My instructors were universally very pleased with my abilities to understand and apply the information I was given. They especially liked my oral and written presentations, as I always made sure to go beyond the bare minimum requirements of a presentation, and effectively provide and utilize things such as professional binding and thorough layout and proofreading of any written reports, and creative use of graphics, multimedia, and handouts for oral presentations. These are some effective ways to ensure superior grades in any business-related courses, and it is certainly a technique that I would encourage struggling students to employ.

I have taught Business Division courses at the community college level for several years, including courses in Macroeconomics, Microeconomics, Intro to Business, and Computer Concepts. When I was teaching, it became known to prospective students that I used many types of nontraditional methods of teaching in order to keep even boring material fresh and fun, in order to enhance learning and retention. I even had a rule that nobody was allowed to drop out of my classes if their only complaint was that they were struggling to understand the subject matter. I felt that this only indicated that I, their teacher, had failed to present the material in a way that any student could succeed in learning it. I feel that this philosophy is also arguably one of the most critical aspects of successful tutoring -- never giving up on a student, and never stopping until the tutor has found a way to make the material understandable and relatable. An interesting result of my creative teaching methods, according to my Business Division chairman, was that he was invariably faced with lines of students asking to be allowed into my already-full classes, and that there was a waiting list of students hoping someone in the class would be unexpectedly transferred to China! Usually I ended up teaching an additional four or five course sections, plus my normal full time class load.

I have taken and taught many varied business courses, and I strive to make any abstract concept both understandable and applicable to real-life situations. I use methods that include determining the student's most effective learning style, and then use many examples so the learner can effectively develop critical thinking skills instead of just memorizing answers. By making both the material and the learning process itself easy, interesting, and fun, students are more likely to do what they need to do to succeed in class, and are also more likely to retain more of the new information, and for a longer period of time. As a tutor, I can provide a level of service that is individualized to an extent that would be an unreasonable expectation of many overworked schoolteachers. As someone who has been a successful business instructor, business employee, and business owner, I have often been involved in many different aspects of business. This allows me to give students insights into the many perspectives in which modern business practices and problems may be viewed. This enables me to provide better explanations and better examples than if I had only had, for example, a strictly academic background and viewpoint. I can help students see the big picture, and can also help them find what their part of the big picture could be. I have participated and learned about so many and varied business concepts that there are probably very few with which I am unfamiliar. Luckily, I see one of my duties as a tutor in any subject is to help the student learn to utilize available resources so that they will be able to effectively seek out their own unfamiliar information needs, thus ensuring their academic success. Business is all around us in our daily lives, and its concepts and peculiarities are definitely able to be mastered with effective tutelage. I look forward to my business students' successes.

GMAT

I scored a 750 on my GMAT, which put me in the 98th percentile nationwide. I then completed my MBA in only 12 months, with a 4.0 GPA. I know that the key to scoring highly on the GMAT is a good understanding of the covered material, but a GREAT understanding of the test methodology, coupled with practice, practice, practice! It also helps to have someone like me, who can impart all the tips, tricks, potential pitfalls ... And who will help keep the inevitable last-minute jitters to a minimum. Besides, you definitely need someone you can call first when you rip the envelope open and see your great score!

Graphic Design

I have over 40 years experience in both graphic design and drafting, and have a two year vo-tech certificate and an associates degree in Drafting and Design. I also have over twenty years of teaching various college-level design courses. It is probably one of my strongest areas, and has been a passion of mine since I was a small child and drew on every piece of paper I could find. When I started junior high, I wasn't even allowed to take design courses, because they, like shop or football, were restricted to boys only! Now it is no longer a strictly male-dominated field, and is an excellent career path for anyone who is detail-oriented and has good visual and spatial acuity.
