I Love children, and I Love teaching!

I have a valid Kansas Teaching License that qualifies me to teach all subjects from Pre-K through 9th grade, as well as special education for students with mild to moderate intellectual, behavioral, and learning disabilities and ESL (English as a Second Language) students. I also have a valid Oklahoma Teaching Certificate that qulifies me to teach all subjects from Pre-K through 8th grade as well as all special education students Pre-K through 12 grade and ESL students. I have 27 years of teaching experience. I taught in general education 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade classes of 16 - 28 students for seven years in private Catholic/Christian schools. I also spent five years as the "Opportunity Teacher", providing opportunities for all students in the private school to achieve their own potential. In this position, I worked collaboratively with classroom teachers, school administration, and special education services provided by the public school districts to identify and serve students with special needs. This included students with learning and behavioral difficulties, as well as gifted and talented students needing additional challenges, enrichment, and opportunities.

In 2001, I accepted a position as a special education teacher in a public school district. I spent six years teaching special education resource Reading, Language Arts/English, and Math, and Study Skills classes, as well as Co-Teaching Math and Language Arts in Inclusion (general ed classes with some special education students) classes for 6th - 8th grade students in an "inner city" Middle School. Then for eight years, I taught Reading, Language Arts, Math, and Study Skills, to special education students in public Elementary Schools in Kansas. This past year I have been teaching remedial reading to 8th grade students in a public Middle School in Oklahoma.

I have experience working with general education students, as well as students with a wide variety of exceptionalities including: mild autism, Asperger's Syndrome, PDD, ADD, ADHD, Mood disorders, physical disabilities, health impairments, learning disabilities, mild retardation or intellectual disabilities, developmental delays, and numerous others.

More about my Teaching: I went to Washburn University where I earned my Bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education, and then my Master’s degree in Special Education. I have been teaching for 25 years; 12 years in private Christian schools and 13 years teaching special education in public schools. I think that sitting for hours on end in meetings and classes is boring. I believe that students feel the same way. I like to teach in ways that keep my students thinking and learning in active, practical ways. Here is a comment written by a former student: You were always my favorite teacher. You didn’t tell us, “Do it this way because I said so.” You always taught in a way that I understood why we did it that way. Then I didn't have to memorize a bunch of stupid rules. I just did what made sense, because I understand the reasons behind the rules.

I am a licensed teacher in the state of Kansas. My license includes PreK-9, Interrelated Special Education K-9, Early Childhood Education, and Building Level Administration. My current license is good through September of 2017. I have been teaching for 26 years. In my current position, I am a special education teacher in a public school, teaching 4th & 5th grade students. As a special education teacher, my primary focus is on Reading, Math, and Writing. But, as a general education teacher, Science was my favorite subject.
