About Jean

I am studying American Literature for my PhD, and am in the process of writing my dissertation. I've been teaching writing or tutoring all throughout college and it's one of the things I love most in my life. I take great joy in helping my students learn to find their own writing voice, and learn how to express themselves for others to understand.
Outside of my studies and teaching, I have two cats that are ten years old. I enjoy reading, super hero movies, drinking coffee, swimming and practicing yoga.

I have been teaching for about 8 years now, so I have a lot of experience working with a variety of students. Before I studied American Literature as a PhD student, I studied British literature as a Master's student, so I'm familiar with a lot of different topics.

I love working with people one-on-one and finding out the learning methods that work best for them.
I look forward to hearing from you.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

English

I am currently working on my PhD in English, studying American literature and Composition and Rhetoric. I have eight years of experience teaching first-year writing at the college level. In addition, I have tutored writing at a university writing center, and led conversation groups for non-native speakers of English.

Literature

I am currently working toward my PhD in American literature, post-1900. Prior to my doctoral studies, I studied British literature of the medieval and Renaissance eras, and even studied the Victorian period.
I have experience with a broad range of literature, because of the wide range of my studies, and I am also a voracious reader.

Proofreading

As a PhD student, I read and write more than any other task. I have become skilled at recognizing typographical errors, in part because of editing my own work, but also because I am trained in close reading of texts. I often work as an editor, proofreading dissertations or theses for other graduate students. Additionally, my teaching experience has helped me learn how to quickly recognize and offer feedback for mechanical issues.

Reading

As a writing teacher for the past eight years, I also spend quite a bit of time teaching my students how to engage in critical reading practices. As such, I have gained experience in helping students learn how to read for comprehension, and also for interpretation critique. I am a voracious reader, and my experience tutoring in a university writing center has exposed me to a wide variety of texts. I can help with reading anything from fiction, to poetry, to articles about psychology or engineering.

Writing

After teaching writing for eight years, I feel more than qualified to work one-on-one in tutoring this process. My graduate studies in English have exposed me to a wide variety of texts, and as such I can recognize what's good and what works well in a wide range of genres. As we work together, I will not simply tell you what to fix in your writing. Instead, we will discuss what your goals are, and talk about the best strategies for reaching them. In this way, you can improve as a writer with each session we have.
