About Mark

I earned a Bachelor's in Biblical Studies. I also earned a Master's in Philosophy, and I finished the coursework and passed the general exams for a Ph.D. in Philosophy. My day job is as an attorney. It is fulfilling, but stressful. Besides my writing, my job as an attorney doesn't include many opportunities to use what I've learned in other subjects. Tutoring is a chance for me to use it.

While I was studying Philosophy, I taught in the OU Philosophy department as a graduate teaching assistant for six semesters, three were teaching logic. It was a joy to stand in front of 20-100 students at a time and talk and discuss subjects I was passionate about. At the same time, I tutored student-athletes in the OU Athletic Department Writing Center and the Athletic Department Math Lab. My joy came from working with students that wanted to improve, that wanted to get good grades, that "got it" while I tutored them. In the Writing Center, I proofread papers from remedial freshman English all the way to 40-page senior capstone papers. In the Math Lab, I helped students with College Algebra, Statistics, Calculus, Probability, and Discrete Math.

Tutoring is the purest form of teaching. A good tutor can meet you on your level and tailor their instructions for you. They only succeed if you succeed.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Bible Studies

My undergraduate degree is in Biblical Studies.

For that degree, I took survey courses in the Old and New Testaments and advanced theology classes on both the Old and New Testaments.

I took additional classes on Romans and Galatians, Acts and Corinthians, Apocalyptic Literature, and Johannine Literature.

I took a year of Koine, or New Testament, Greek as well. Although, it is not at the level to tutor it as a separate subject.

English

I tutored English and writing in the OU Athletic Department for three and a half years.

At the same time, I proofread papers for the Writing Center: everything from freshman English to senior capstone papers.

My undergraduate, graduate, and professional schooling have all required writing, sometimes very long papers, to succeed.

I required papers in some of the classes I taught in the University of Oklahoma Philosophy Department.

Logic

I taught Intro to Logic three (3) times at the University of Oklahoma, and I taught Critical Reasoning once.

I took fifteen (15) graduate level hours in symbolic logic, philosophy of mathematics, inductive logic, and the theory of computation as a Master's and Ph.D. student at the University of Oklahoma.

Philosophy

I taught in the philosophy department of the University of Oklahoma for six (6) semesters. I have a Master's in philosophy from OU. I also completed the coursework and general exams to become a Ph.D. candidate in philosophy at OU.

Proofreading

I proofread papers for the University of Oklahoma Athletic Department Writing Center for three and a half years.

I had the privilege of reading and correcting everything from freshman English papers to senior capstone papers.

My day job requires writing most days, and my years of undergraduate, graduate, and professional school forced me to learn technically correct writing.
