About Ted

I love teaching and tutoring almost as much as I love learning! I have worked in education for the last thirteen years from pre-k to the graduate level and beyond, as a writing consultant in college writing centers and as a certified teacher. I have a broad body of knowledge with nearly 300 college credit hours and am a specialist in both science and literacy education. I plan to be a student until I cannot find a school to accept me anymore.

My favorite aspect of being an educator lies in helping students grasp ideas and skills that they didn't think they could master. To this end, I have made it a goal to learn as much about how the brain learns, assessing gaps in students knowledge that are undermining their current learning endeavors and finding ways to accommodate those gaps with specially developed approaches suited to their learning styles.

My philosophy is that every student can learn. My job is to identify which tools they need to succeed and help them to discover and utilize those tools. I find that I am better able to fulfill this mission in very small groups or in a one on one setting. I always try to connect with students and develop my lessons based on individual likes and dislikes, individual learning styles, and in a positive and reinforcing manner.

Finally, I feel that, as a tutor, I am a member of your student's learning team and work in that capacity.

I have always been a scientist, having won regional science fairs as a youngster. I have a very broad body of knowledge in science with coursework in chemistry, physics, biology, zoology, geology, geomorphology, astronomy, psychology, cultural anthropology, physical anthropology, linguistic anthropology, forensic anthropology, anatomy and physiology, archaeology. Additionally, I have worked in the field as an archaeologist at sites featured in National Geographic as well as centers for archaeological research, and I am an occasional Mad Scientist.

I feel that any exploration of science should be fun, first and foremost. I love tutoring students in science because I feel that I have a lot more room to teach science with hands on activities that help students truly understand the scientific process and concepts in a way that simply isn't possible in the modern classroom. This allows me to share my broad body of scientific knowledge in terms of concrete, observable phenomena which is the way science should be taught. After all, science is all about observation and predictions.

I have been in love with books since fourth grade. I am an avid reader and writer and have worked to help others develop the same passion for reading that I have had. I have worked in writing centers at multiple universities, taught literacy in early childhood education, and served as the membership chair for the local literacy council, as well as volunteering at local schools. I also have a literacy specialization attached to one of my Masters in Education degrees and am an expert in identifying reading disorders, making accommodations to help students overcome those disorders, and go on to be successful readers and writers in a positive, encourage, and patient manner.

I am also an expert on the origin of writing, having studied ancient writing systems for nearly a decade, including cuneiform, Egyptian and Mayan hieroglyphics, and Latin and have presented lectures on the origins of writing at the University of Oklahoma, Missouri State University, and historical conferences. I enjoy using this body of knowledge in helping students understand the nature, structure, and purpose of reading and writing, how is has influenced their lives, and why it is important for everybody to know how to read. I also am widely read in western history, non-western history, new world history, American history, mythology, epic poetry, western literature, non-western literature (especially Asian literature), early American literature, children's literature, science-fiction, fantasy, and horror. I go out of my way to keep students engaged in their reading by identifying their personal likes and centering lessons around those things.

Having worked in a certified capacity in elementary education for the past several years and holding dual masters degrees in elementary education, I am ideally suited to tutoring younger students. I have a strong understanding of common core curriculum, know where to get and how to utilize resources that help students succeed, and have a deep understanding of neurological, physiological, and emotional development in youngsters.

My philosophy is that all children not only can, but do, learn--constantly. It is my job to make sure that I am teaching them the right thing, which ideally is that they, as humans, are naturally predisposed to reading and writing. As such, they start off full aware that they will be successful learners.

Having raised a special needs child on my own for the last 13 years, and having had a great deal of success in the classroom and as a private tutor, I know how to assess individual students' special needs, and how to accommodate those needs and specific learning styles to help students be successful. This is largely due to both my philosophy that all people constantly learn and my understanding of neurological functioning and disorders, special needs assessments and accommodations, and my patient, loving nature.

Thank you for taking the time to read my profile and for considering me as a member of your learning team. I look forward to meeting and learning about your student so that I can develop a set up lessons especially for your student that will help the succeed in reach the stars that they dream of. If you would like specific referrals from parents I have worked with individually in the past, feel free to contact me so that I can put you in contact with them.
