About Garrett

I started tutoring some fellow classmates during the latter part of my time in college. I then tutored high school students in Cambridge MA on a volunteer basis.

I completed a undergraduate degree in Biology and just completed my Master's degree in Biomedical Sciences. My coursework in both my degrees has given me the foundation to break down concepts in better ways to facilitate learning.

It's great when I see students that are struggling with concepts break through that wall and put the pieces together for themselves. I strive to accomplish that with those that I help. My goal is to give students the tools to make them more self reliant in order to replicate the process of achieving academic success in the future.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Algebra 1

I've completed Calculus I during my undergraduate degree, which needed a solid understanding of lower level math classes like Algebra I.

Biology

I have a B.S. in Biology from Suffolk University, and an M.S. in Biomedical Sciences from the Eastern Virginia Medical School. Both degrees have an emphasis on the biological sciences, with many upper level courses.

Elementary (K-6th)

I've previously worked and tutored elementary students in Cambridge and Dorchester, MA. I've worked with organizations that help elementary aged students (ages 9, 10, 11, and 12) learn about art, math, and team building. Working with this age group is rewarding because it allows me to help children build good habits, helping them to succeed, and ultimately reinforce those habits.

Elementary Science

I have completed a B.S. in Biology and an M.S. in the Biomedical Sciences, completing courses in both the physical and biological sciences. In addition, I have experience tutoring elementary aged students in math and science.

Genetics

I received an A in genetics in college, along with working with my genetics professor at the Whitehead institute in Cambridge MA, carrying out experiments characterizing DNA sequences of transcription factor binding sites in Saccharomyces cerevisiae. I feel with my coursework in genetics and molecular biology I am proficient in the subject of genetics to tutor those who request help.

Organic Chemistry

I especially excelled in organic chemistry II, earning an A- in college. I ended up tutoring some of my fellow classmates in college in the subject also. I felt my solid understanding of the concepts allowed me to break topics down for those I helped, allowing them to bridge more difficult pieces of information together, ultimately resulting in a better understanding of the material. This reinforced my knowledge and allowed them to apply their new found knowledge in practical applications.

Physiology

Completion of Physics I and II
Completion of Human Physiology and Anatomy

Prealgebra

I completed a B.S. in Biology where my highest math class completed was Calculus I.
