I am a native speaker of Mandarin Chinese. I spent the first 22 years of my life in mainland China. I have an MA degree in Liberal Arts from St. John's College, Annapolis, Maryland, and a BA degree in English from Guangdong University of Foreign Studies, China.
I own a boutique language and culture services business. I have been teaching business Chinese classes at a tech company since 2013. From 2013 to 2014, I was an adjunct professor of Chinese in the Confucius Classroom at St. Augustine's University in Raleigh, North Carolina, where I was solely responsible for teaching as well as designing the curriculum. Over the years I have also tutored many young professionals and executives. I enjoy working with private students the most, as they are generally highly motivated and I get to know them well enough to meet their individual needs.
Additionally, I am a Court Certified Interpreter and contract Chinese interpreter and translator working with various health care providers, educational organizations, government departments, and business entities. I am also Chinese translator and voice-over talent at the NBC Golf Channel. In my spare time, I enjoy doing yoga, playing badminton, and cooking authentic Chinese food. I recently experienced Mandarin tutoring sessions with Tianlu R. whom I found to be an excellent instructor! She is very focused on each of the students and their progress and what we wanted to gain from the instruction to help our focus as well. With each class I found myself stretched more with learning without feeling overwhelmed and also I appreciated the light atmosphere which helped me relax and have fun while learning. Highly recommended!

I am a adult learning Chinese for the first time. I selected Tianlu because of her background and the fact that she is fluent in both English and Chinese. I felt that her having mastered both languages would be very beneficial to me. I was correct. Tianlu is a wonderful, pleasant tutor with a mastery of both languages. She has helped me practice and role play Chinese with great patience. Very relaxed atmosphere. Tianlu allowed me to ask questions about Chinese culture as well, which was very beneficial to me since I am using my Chinese to communicate with my Chinese neighbors. Knowing something about the culture is very important as our cultures are very different. I highly recommend Tianlu if you are looking for a Chinese tutor, I don't think you could find a more knowledgeable, competent and caring tutor!
Tianlu is a great tutor. She is understanding and works to teach beyond the lesson. I've made great progress since I've taken lessons with Tianlu. I wish I had her help back when I was taking college classes. It would have made a huge difference.
Tianlu is a great teacher and is very good at helping with pronunciations in Mandarin. She teaches with an organized style with Integrated Chinese textbooks and has lots of websites where you can learn Chinese.
Most of all, although reading and knowing how to write characters is a hard thing to do, she thoroughly explains how to write every character that are in the textbook. If you want to learn Chinese, but don't know where to start, meet Tianlu and she will give you great advice and teach you practical Chinese!
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
