About Dave

In addition to my family, I have two strong passions: Public Speaking and History. I have been a public speaker for several decades with perhaps my most significant accomplishment winning the World Championship of Public Speaking from Toastmasters International. I was a history major at the Air Force Academy and I love helping people remember history and discovering the significance of past events.

There is one other thing I need to mention, I love to teach and coach others. I come from a family of educators and I have found helping others to grow and develop very rewarding.

If you want to learn math from someone who knows your pain and knows how to overcome your pain, I'm your guy. If you need to learn study skills from someone who had made all the mistakes and learned a better way, I'm your guy. If you want to find a fun way to learn history from someone who know how to tell a great story or if you want to learn how to speak from someone who has an exciting history, I'm your guy!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Algebra 1

I feel that I have an edge for helping young people grasp Algebra. I had to really work at it as a child myself and I have helped my 3 sons with their math work in the past. While I majored in history at the Air Force Academy, I also had many math and engineering classes that have prepared me to tutor my children and perhaps yours too.

American History

I majored in history for my Bachelors Degree. I have also completed graduate course work in the History. Perhaps what makes me most qualified in the subject is that I enjoy history and study history for pleasure.

ASVAB

I am a retired Air Force officer and I had a tour as a Recruiting Squadron Commander. I can not only help you with the test but I can help answer questions about the military.

Elementary Math

I have a wealth of experience with Elementary Math. I have tutored my own three children as well as other children learn simple ways to make sense of math. Some have actually said the words "Math" and "fun" in the same sentence. (NO, they did NOT say, "Math is not fun".)

English

I hold a Masters degree and I am a world class communicator. I believe in the correct use of the English language and I am an experienced coach for communication proficiency.

GED

I am qualified to teach GED classes because I have a diverse academic background that covers math, science, history, and the language arts. Additionally, I am an experienced tutor, trainer, and teacher with touching the lives of children and adults.

Government & Politics

In addition to having studied government and political science in school I have practical knowledge as well. I was the first High School intern in the state of California's legislature. I worked for Willie Brown who went on to become Speaker of the House and later Mayor of San Francisco. (The new Bay Bridge is named for him) I have also worked on political campaigns, organized political events, and kept current on political events. I have running for office on my bucket list.

Microsoft PowerPoint

I have been using PowerPoint professionally for more than 10 years as a presenter. I produced hundreds of presentations and I have learned how to use PowerPoint to produce graphic pictures, to modify photos, and create close to movie effects. I also am a master at preventing the dreaded "death by PowerPoint".

Physical Science

I love the study of science. My academic background is diverse enough and my interest in science that I can help young minds discover the scientist within.

Prealgebra

I have had sufficient college level math to qualify for a minor in engineering. Additionally, I am experienced in tutoring young people who are not comfortable with math and math facts. I feel it is far more important to understand the process than to just get the “right answer” and I coach students in a way that focuses on learning the process.

Public Speaking

I joined Toastmasters International where I competed against a field of approximately 25,000 others to earn the 1991 World Championship of Public Speaking. My many years of public speaking experience includes television, radio, and in front of audiences both large and small. Additionally, I have had Dale Carnegie Training and was consistently recognized as one of the top performers.

Study Skills

I have both a BS and a MLA degree. In addition, I am a graduate of several military and civilian training programs. All of my course work has been completed while sustaining some time consuming duties. I had to learn study skills just for survival. I was once one of those students who did well academically without much effort. That is, until I attended the Air Force Academy. The course load and the other requirements had an enormous impact on my time. This is where I leaned how to make my study time count.

World History

I was a history major at the United States Air Force Academy and I remain interested in the value of history. I read and study history for relaxation and I believe that history needs to be taught in a manner that makes it an interesting experience.

Able to connect with reluctant learners

Dave spent the time getting to know my son and a great relationship with him. My son is shy and hates math. Dave is the right person to turn things around for my son. He is so energetic and positive. He obviously LOVES to teach.
