As far as my educational background is concerned, I recently graduated with bachelor’s degrees in both mathematics and physics from the University of Oklahoma. In addition to this, I earned minors in both Chemistry and Spanish Language. In addition to coursework in Spanish, I have had many real life experiences speaking Spanish, for I was a medical translator for doctors at local clinics for a year. However, from my experiences in tutoring, I have discovered that doing well in a course and helping someone else do well in a course requires a new set of skills. The first opportunity I had to tutor was at Southern Nazarene University, where I tutored General Chemistry I&II and College Algebra in my sophomore year of college. I enjoyed this position so much that in the subsequent year I added General Physics I&II to the set of courses that I tutored. At this point, I felt that I had enough professional tutoring experience that I began private tutoring for various math, science, and Spanish courses as well. In the subsequent year, I changed jobs to start working at the University of Oklahoma’s Math Center, where I tutored both single and multivariable calculus.

I believe that tutoring is a skill of its own, and so only through experience and trial and error can one become a good tutor. After tutoring privately and professionally for a total of 3 years, I have found a unique and effective tutoring method. When a student asks a question, I like to start at the root of the problem and to see if they understand the fundamentals. This is usually where students have confusion, and so this is the first step that I take when tutoring. Though this process may seem arduous and tedious, it is the most important step in building a student’s understanding and intuition for the subject. Once the students have developed their understanding, they are able to solve many of their previous problems themselves. Then, all that is left to do is to walk students through the minor details of new course material, for the students will have gained much more maturity in the subject that they once were struggling with. Ultimately, though it may seem counterintuitive for a tutor to do so, I hope to make students as independent of me as possible by giving them understanding and confidence in their courses.

Spanish

Spanish

As a native speaker of three other languages, Spanish is my first learned language. I believe that growing up speaking three different languages has helped my skills in the Spanish language. I have formally studied Spanish for a total of 6 years, and I was a medical translator in Spanish for a year. I hope that my passion for the Spanish language will be picked up by students, for this passion is what allowed me to learn this beautiful language so well.

Algebra 1,

Algebra 1

Algebra is a subject that I have a large familiarity with, for I have upwards of 3 years of experience tutoring the subject. Since I have a bachelor's degree in math, I have a strong grasp and understanding of all of the topics in algebra. Likewise, my experience tutoring courses related to algebra have allowed me to develop an excellent teaching method for the subject.
Algebra 2,

Algebra 2

Algebra is a subject that I have a large familiarity with, for I have upwards of 3 years of experience tutoring the subject. Since I have a bachelor's degree in math, I have a strong grasp and understanding of all of the topics in algebra. The topic of algebra is so pervasive in the rest of mathematics, and so I try and help students understand the fundamentals of this subject. This fundamental understanding will lead to increased confidence and ability in algebra.
Calculus,

Calculus

Calculus is a subject that I have a large familiarity with, not only because I have a bachelor's degree in math, but also because I have tutored calculus at the University of Oklahoma's Math Center for a year now. Likewise, I have done private tutoring for calculus for two years. My approach to teaching calculus is to not just help the students get the right answers, but to help them understand what they are doing. My background in the theory of calculus allows me to explain to students the concepts behind the material, so that they will develop a deep understanding, which inevitably leads to better student performance in the class.
Chemistry,

Chemistry

My coursework in chemistry includes General and Organic Chemistry I,II and Biochemistry. I tutored chemistry professionally for 2 years as well. When I tutor students in chemistry, I like to describe what is going on at the atomic/molecular level. Once students gain this intuition, they become much more successful in their coursework.
Physics,

Physics

I have a strong background in physics, for I have a bachelor's degree in the subject and have tutored it both professionally and privately for 2 years. Roughly speaking, physics is the study of nature, and so it is quite feasible for students to gain an intuition for the subject material. Unfortunately, this intuition is never learned by throwing formulas at students, which many professors do. My goal is to help students gain an intuition so that they understand the formulas, which leads to better student performance.
Precalculus,

Precalculus

As a graduate student, I currently teach a precalculus course at the University of Oklahoma. Not only do a have the proper level of understanding of the material, but I have also tutored the subject for upwards of 3 years. Therefore, I believe that I have strong qualifications to tutor this subject.

Differential Equations,

Differential Equations

My experience in differential equations is very broad, for I have taken two different courses in the subject. One course was more theoretical and focused more on guaranteeing the existence and uniqueness of solutions, and the other was a more practical course where many different types of differential equations were solved. Working at the University of Oklahoma's Math Center, which mainly does calculus tutoring, I would have some students come in for help for differential equations. Thankfully, I was able to help these students out as well, for there was not too many places on campus that offered help in this course.
Linear Algebra,

Linear Algebra

Algebra itself is an extensive topic in the field of mathematics, and I have taken courses in Linear and Abstract Algebra. Linear Algebra was less theoretical and had many application-type problems, but in Abstract Algebra the theory of vector spaces is explored in much more detail. From these courses I have developed a strong intuition for both the practical and theoretical aspects of Linear Algebra. I have also privately tutored students who thought they were going to fail the course into getting grades that surprised them.

Calculus

Missed a few calculus classes and Ray explained everything in the simplest of terms and caught me back up with the rest of the class. Easy to get along with as well.

Focused on tutoring you

From the moment Ray meets you for the first session, he is ready to go. He guides you through your work and carefully scans for errors, which has literally saved my grade on a few assignments. He maintains a flexible schedule, and when he comes in for a session, he respects your time. I found that during my sessions, Ray checked the time ONLY to keep on schedule and never made me feel pressured or rushed. Near the ends, he even stayed to take a couple of minutes of his own time to make sure that everything was finished. If you are looking for someone knowledgeable, focused, well prepared, patient, and diligent, then Ray is a perfect tutor.
