About Avery

Hello, my name is Avery and I am currently an undergraduate studying meteorology at the University of Oklahoma. I've always loved math and science, and would love passing the knowledge I've gained on to you. Struggling stinks, and I would love to help you.

I do not have a whole lot of experience tutoring, however, I have helped several friends pass some of their harder math and science classes. I loved helping them understand the material when their instructor could not. It tends to be how it is explained--an assigned instructor may not have the teaching style you need to make everything click. That's what I'm here for. I have a very laid back style of tutoring. I explain how to approach the problem, and the "why" aspect has not always mattered. If you care about the "why" aspect, I can explain that to you. That is how I've always learned, and I have done well that way.

As for my math qualifications: I received a 30 on my math ACT, and I have taken (since high school) Algebra I and II, geometry, Precalculus, Trigonometry, Calculus, and am currently taking Physical Mathematics.

As for availability, I am fairly flexible. Feel free to contact me if you would like to learn more about my teaching style, would like to hear more about me, or would like to schedule a lesson. I would love to hear from you!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT Math

I completed the Math portion of the ACT with a 30. It's all about time management and strategy, and maybe some math. I can teach you my strategy that I used to get through it. I started with a 21 on the practice ACT to quantify the improvement.

ACT Science

I've always excelled in science courses in high school and college. The ACT Science subject test was my best score. I scored a 32. It's all about knowing where to look and time management in the test. I can teach you this.

Algebra 1

Algebra 1 is the first experience I had with any sort of Algebra. I took it in a high school that expected previous knowledge of Algebra. It was extremely stressful and confusing at first, why do letters need to be in math? Math is numbers right? However, by the end of the year I was doing extremely well. I want to help you get everything to click like it did for me, and help you get an A.

Algebra 2

Algebra 2 is a continuation of Algebra 1. You've lost a lot of what you learned in Algebra 1 or your teacher stinks. You need a supplement. I can help. I had a great time in this course in high school, and ended with an A. I had to do some work on my own, which made it a lot more difficult. I can help you learn more on your own or refresh on old Algebra 1 concepts.

Chemistry

I took Chemistry in both high school and college. My high school offered General Chemistry and Advanced Chemistry. I got an A in both courses and got 100+% on nearly all of my exams. College Chemistry was more of a challenge, but I still did well and know many tips and tricks that may help.

Elementary Math

Elementary Math can be a struggle, especially for a student who couldn't care less. I cannot make them care; however, I can aide them in doing well. I can apply logic to math, which is especially helpful in learning times tables, addition and subtraction, and the similar. This is also helpful in word problems. I have great general knowledge of elementary math, and I can also explain it in a way a student can understand, and even apply things to life to make things more interesting.

Elementary Science

When I was in elementary school, I greatly enjoyed every science course I ever took. From learning about how plants grow to the evolution of a butterfly from a caterpillar, I excelled. Sometimes I needed to rethink things because the teacher didn't do the best job in explaining things in a way I understood, but that's what I'm here for now. I want to explain things in a way your child understands.

Geometry

Geometry in one word: Shapes. A follow up word: Proofs. I didn't understand these at all at first. The teacher expected me to be more prepared than I was. Ultimately, I worked hard and got a great grasp of the subject and ended up doing well. I can help you avoid the struggle I had that can cause your grade to suffer at first.

Prealgebra

Prealgebra is a great transition into Algebra. There is a lot of word problems in this course to prepare you for the setting up of Algebra problems. Even if you aren't struggling here, I can help you get ahead and ready for Algebra, especially if you're skipping Prealgebra and going straight to Algebra.
