I retired after 28 great years of teaching High School Science in Florida and Oklahoma. The courses I taught included Biology (10th Grade), and Chemistry, Anatomy/Physiology, Zoology, and Botany for 11 and 12th Grades.
I participated in a five year NSF Research Grant as a Science Curriculum writer developing new laboratory learning activities (Learning Cycles) based upon the research and learning theory of Jean Piaget. This new “Learning Cycle” curriculum was implemented within the Norman Public Schools, and later in several high-schools throughout the state of Oklahoma.
Following this five year NSF research grant, I was employed by the University of Oklahomaas Adjunct Professor, College of Education, Science Education Center, Norman, Oklahoma (1989 -1998).
Courses taught: EDSC 5513 Teaching Science in The Secondary Schools (for Graduate Students who are or plan to become Science Teachers); Biology: UC 0123 400 (for students who require a lab-science course in order to be eligible for enrollment at the University of Oklahoma); and Biology for College Freshman/Sophomores, (Special program sponsored by O.U. Health Science Center). And I am a co-author of two Science Education Curriculum Guides.
I also serve as an "External Evaluator" (under private contract) for Math and Science Project grants funded through the Oklahoma State Department of Education. I evaluate the impact of new, innovative teacher training - aligned with the State Standards for Math (pK-12) - on both the teachers and their students.
I have received the following awards/nominations: Nominated for the "Presidential Award for Excellence in Secondary Science and Mathematics" twice, and once for the "Distinguished Teaching Awards - National Science Teachers Association." And I was awarded "Teacher of the Year" at Central Mid-High School, Norman, Oklahoma. (1991-1992)
I have the following Teacher Certification: (Oklahoma) Biology, Chemistry, Earth Science, Physical Science, Astronomy, Environmental Science, and Physics.
Learning anything requires more than just memorizing facts or formulas. "To understand is to invent!" Jean Piaget. This means that to truly learn a new concept and understand it in a meaningful and useful way, you must incorporate the new information that you are learning so that it "fits" with what you already know, or you must see how what you already know must be modified to include the new knowledge. You "invent" a new understanding. I strive to find ways to help students acquire that kind of meaningful understanding so it becomes a part of what you really know not just something you memorize (without knowing what it means). In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
